Ugh, can we stop with the gender and sexuality threads? You guys are like vegans. Everyone has to know you’re one.
I can see where you’re coming from, OP. Personally I think the character is still valuable even if there are some potential issues, but as someone who has always been comfortably cis I might not have the right perspective.
Mostly I just wanted to say how happy I am that people can have an actual discussion about this for almost 50 posts so far without devolving into trollery. There’ve been a couple attempts but they were appropriately ignored. I’m really proud of y’all.
Not to bash on any transgender pride or representation here. But from what we gathered in the Lore so far on shadowlands your appearance can literally change based on what you want or like or what ever if your anima is strong enough. So Pelegos who ever that may be had such strong anima he could change into a she or what ever the transition was.
Thats the lore view point i dont think they had any intention of saying you cant truely be gender a or b in life and if you want it one has to be dead. Imagine the political backfire blizzard would receive from such a stunt.
I’m not trans, so maybe I just don’t understand how much it may mean to those who are trans. So apologies if this comes off as rude in any way. But I don’t exactly have a problem with this being the way Pelagos embraces his true self. WoW, although it has all this fantastical magic, doesn’t have the sorts of medical practices that we do in real life. So it makes sense that one of the ways it could
Happen is through said magic and your soul being the incarnation of your true self.
What I do have a problem with in regards to Pelagos? Pelagos’ voice. It just doesn’t land right, and in the portions where Pelagos is having these really emotional moments like…
(spoilers)
where he tries to ascend after feeling like he’s no real use to anyone, and then has to fight against his inner demons, he sounds like Sonic the Hedgehog. Yes. Sonic the Hedgehog.
Gross … my boyfriends father refuses to allow him to wear nail polish whenever he’s home … because it’ll make him gay…
he’s already dating a man
Some of the men who have slept with the most women wear nail polish… and eyeliner.
No.
Moar gender and sexuality threads. They make phobic people so upset. How else am I going to get salt for my popcorn?
I’m really questioning humanity with this thread ,if you can’t affirm yourself in life then what is a person? OMG.
I’m legitimately curious as to what you mean by the “other” in this circumstance, as in…cisgender people who are literally every other character in the game? Who are already “empowered.” OP has an absolutely good point, and it’s a shame that ya’ll aren’t taking it into consideration that while yes it hits the representation check mark, it isn’t the best story telling for the character.
Instead of Pelagos, they should make Malfurion trans instead.
Yeaaa when I read they were trying for trans-inclusion and then saw how they were introducing it, I cringed. It’s clear this was thought up in some meeting by people who aren’t very self aware or aware of the trans community. Womp womp. Heres to some developer getting it right, eventually.
Opinions are like belly buttons, everyone has them.
I didn’t really realize I was a transwoman either until I was well into my early twenties… it didn’t help that 2009 - the year I turned 19 - was especially traumatic in part due to my abusive parents and other factors… I focused on a lot of other things and kind of tried to tune out everything else, which I admit wasn’t exactly healthy… for example, back then I started binge-watching South Park, Family Guy, and other comedy TV shows just to distract myself from actual suicidal thoughts I was having during that time… I’m at least a bit better off now, I promise…
YAAAAAS!
and they’re really close, too! I just think a few minor edits in the quest text shouldn’t be too much to ask for, right? To imply that yes if you feel dysphoria in Azeroth you can do something about it; otherwise trans (or at least synchronously presenting) characters are almost de-canonized. Why include in-life dysphoria but not in-life affirmation…
I’ll be real, I feel like you’re reading too much into this. Yes, Pelagos died. The ritual for Bastion is that you must forget your entire life and all that in order to be what’s needed. He was a woman, he became a man in the afterlife, achieving his true form where there is no pain and all that.
I’m a Roman Catholic. I’ve been told when I die and go to heaven, I will be a painless version of myself. I’ve had 22 surgeries, almost died 3 times, I’m scarred in some locations, I have a bad leg, etc. This is not a pity party, nor am I voicing it for some reason other than to prove a point related to Pelagos. In my situation, one could draw a similar conclusion. That life is pain but in the after life / Heaven or whatever, that I would finally be free of any lingering pain whether it be from those 22 surgeries, near-death experiences, or my bad leg, whatever.
That’s not the point here though, and it’s not the point with Pelagos. The point behind Pelagos is he’s literally an angel boy who helps guide the dead to their chosen purpose, and that he, like everyone else, has things he had to overcome. Look into the positives. Don’t look so hard into the possible negatives that you draw this kind of conclusion.
yea i know they want this to be a great progressive token point but just… dont do it like this. it comes off cringy and has negative undertones.
best rectification is to show a cinematic of his life, on his homeworld fighting valoriously. dying and ending up at the gates of bastion. begging to be reformed into what he felt deep down inside.
In wow magic can change one shape so maybe pel biology was attracted to men while his true soul was male?
Because having a sexual orientation does not make a character interesting or unique. Their struggles and defining points are what TRULY make them. I don’t want a WoW character that admits he is gay. I want an interesting WoW character that has a story that I can reflect to. Anduin admitting he is gay won’t put me off the edge of my seat.
Being transgender also means you are not invulnerable to criticism or placed on a higher pedestal. YOU are human and like all human beings. We have a tendency to do our worst or best. So let’s stop focusing on sexual orientation and on actual fantasy development, please.
I think the main reason the text is like that is not for trans people but to represent the shadowlands as it’s supposed to be. The fact that he is a man in this new life is special in itself, to show that death isn’t so bad in the warcraft setting. If Pelagos had been transitioned in life already then it would reduce the effect of the shadowlands settings.
That’s why a change in dialogue might not makes sense.
However in this case it is true it can affect some people IRL therefore perhaps they should change it anyway. Or maybe make Pelagos another type of character, like , say a Tauren that’s just there and is trans.
I imagine that whatever planet or race Pelagos came from didn’t have the means to transition, or the science to identify and diagnose dysphoria.
It’s possible that Pelagos lived in life not understanding why he was dysphoric until he died and suddenly was happy with his form.
