Mail Not Recognizing Toons On Friends List

My wife and I have many toons across three accounts. We have added each other as friends using RealID as well as adding individual toons view /friend. Recently, when we go to mail each other items (usually sending to bank toons or AH toons), the mail system does not auto-complete the toon name. We have to type in the whole name. Then, when we click send, the mail system asks the typical “Are you sure you want to send this stuff to someone you may not know?” dialog you get when mailing to someone not on your friends list.

I turned off all addons and tested a few things and found the following for two toons I’ll call “sender” and “receiver” toons:

  1. The affected receiver toons all show us as with “Unknown” listed in the friends list of the sender where the “last online entry” usually appears.

  2. If I have a receiver toon log on, the sender toon friends list properly displays them as logged on and the mail system auto-completes their name and does not ask me if I am sure if I want to send them mail.

  3. Once I have done #2, the sender toon account “knows” about the receiver toon account even if the receiver toon logs off. This is true even after the sender has done a /reload. Once the sender toon logs off and back on again, though, the old behavior returns with the receiver appearing on the sender’s friend list with a last online of “Unknown” and the mail system not auto-completing their name and asking the “are you sure” question when sending.

  4. This is not limited to one account, but it does seem that if one toon on an receiver account is not recognized by a sender account, none of the toons on the receiver account will be recognized by the receiver account. Specifically, if a sender does not “know” about a receiver toon on another account, it won’t know about any of the toons on that receiver account.

  5. We have not only added out BNet accounts as friend but also added each individual toons as friends via /friend and that does not solve the problem.

  6. As I stated about, I disabled all addons for this test.

  7. I have removed toons from a sender’s friends list an added it back but the behavior doe not change.

Given the above, it seems to be an issue with the relationship between entire Bnet accounts via the friends list.

is there a fix for this?

I know you tried disabling your addons, but I would try actually doing a Full UI Reset and making sure that you have the receiving character in your friend’s list.

Thanks so much for your help. I did as you suggested. It resolved the issue. Then, I exited the game, restored the original folders, and logged back in. The mail system recognized the friends. I logged out, then logged right back in again and the mail system no longer recognized the friends.

I did another Full UI Reset. I then restored the original folders again and logged in. Once again, the receiver friend was recognized. This time, instead of logging out, I killed wow.exe. When I logged back in, the friend account was still recognized. Only when I executed a Logout in the game client and then logged back in did the receiver friend become unrecognizable.

So it seems something is happening during logout, not during logging to affect the friends list in the mail system. (All with addon still disabled.)

Does that factoid spark any ideas on how to fix without rebuilding my whole UI?

Unfortunately, that makes it sound like one of your addons is misbehaving and causing this to happen. If the stock UI is working as intended, then you might need to figure out which addon is the culprit :frowning:
