Mage vs BM Hunter in Wrath

So just a quick question, I never played mage in Wrath since I was always on my tank or hunter during that time, but how does mage compare in Wrath as far as DPS and difficulty in rotation?

I have nerve issues in my right hand that simply don’t give me the dexterity to do complex rotations, or even remotely complex which is why I played BM hunter which was easy.

Are mages much more DPS?

Is there rotation very involved?

I am kind of looking at changing my DPS class this time around.

What about warlocks? LOL How do they compare?

I don’t know about rotations, but I do remember that Fire Mage and Affliction Warlock both did very well in raids. Marksman Hunter was also pretty good, but wasn’t quite as high.

Yeah I played fire mage after wrath, but the constant paying attention to your power and if it was building up to much or whatever LOL…it was weird for me to get used to

Of the three, I think Fire has the least going on when it comes to doing good dps. MM hunter has more buttons to press. Affliction mostly revolves around DoTs, but there is alot that you need to keep track of if you want to play it properly.

I am simplifying things obviously, so if you want a more in depth look at how these specs played, I would take a look at a website called WoWtavern.

The things I’ve read say fire mage in wrath is the simplest to play. It’s just apply scorch every 30 seconds, living bomb every 12, and spam fireball. Cast pyro when you get two crits in a row. You also have like no responsibilities outside dps.

Oh and it’s #1 in damage.

Huh, I might have to give it a shot thanx!!

BM Hunter is considered a meme spec. It’s damage is well below Survival/MM at all stages.

Fire Mage is a theoretical top DPS, but only during ICC for the most part. Arcane will be the go to for at least T7, if not T8 - it depends on fight length. Crit levels simply won’t be high enough until ToC at the earliest for Fire to be a clear winner. Affliction, however, is considered the best DPS spec in Wrath as from start to finish it’s S tier. It’s also much more interesting to play.

Fire is just keep up living bomb, spam fireball. Pyroblast when hot streak proc. Thats it

BM hunter got nerfed to hell in Wotlk. Hunter’s best spec will be Marksmanship, which will be B to A tier.

Fire mages and Afflic warlocks are both incredibly solid and S tier specs.

How are fire mages here in TBC? I see frost mages everywhere, but if I wanted to start one I prefer being the spec I will be in Wrath, but is fire any good here?

Only for buffing warlocks (and even then arcfire outperforms it). So it hasn’t really been a thing since p1.

Survival does better with lower gear levels (similar with Fire and Arcane), since Marksman does a lot better with ArP. It’s likely MM will overtake Survival - potentially, since Survival can still do well with good RNG - in T8~T9.

If you don’t have Innervates to be fed to you, Arcane is a lot worse. But right now Fire is outperformed by Arcane due to the short fights.

The answer is always MAGE, its never hunter, hunters are for well those people… You know you want to play the class that has the name of the company for one of its spells… I mean common man.

I will be going mage, but one of the most fun things I liked about the hunter was collecting pets back when types mattered, but as good as BM Hunters were at soloing, I do remember they were lacking in DPS in high end content.

For wrath, a hunter dps is MM or SV. BM was not good in wrath. It gets nerfed HARD.

This is for raids, solo content BM is still great.

Also BM won’t be as bad if we are using the last class builds from wotlk, because it got buffed a little through wrath, but the heavy handed nerfs from wrath launch to bm never really had it recover to outpace MM and SV in raids.

People played BM Hunter in Wrath? My memory could be off but I seem to remember hunters respecing in Wrath because BM was nerfed to the ground.

I want to say that they were the bottom dps spec during Wrath.

So, go mage.

It will depend on the spell behavior of Spell Steal and Mind Control in Northrend.

mages are always more dps, as for rotation, just pick two specs, I would do arcane and fire as frost doesn’t seem as cool.

Close, but not quite. Frost Mage is the bottom DPS spec, and that includes tank spec DPS.
