Really hate how mage has gotten so far away from “glass cannon”. Think frost mage particularly has lost a lot of its identity with shatters. Lot of work would need to be done to fix this in terms of design - one thing a mage much smarter than me suggested was adding an effect to shields.
With its current iteration, blazing/ice/prismatic barriers are essentially fire-and-forget HP increases. Boring and incredibly easy to use. Would love to see a change that did this:
For every second (mage shield of X school) is active, amount absorbed is reduced by Y% (5-10%).
In the present meta shields are easily used off-CD with little to no afterthought. This change would (1) punish mages for using this as almost a rotational ability vs. using it as a shield (2) vastly increase the skillcap of the ability as well as the counterplay around it. Would love thoughts. As mentioned earlier, not originally my idea although heard it and thought it was a good one.

Yeah. Fading durability on mage shields would be really cool. Is the CD shorter than the duration of the shield? Would help prevent doubling down on how much value it gives too.

Mages have been one of the toxic offenders since S1, so yeah, he can be. Plus it’s his class.
While Destro is disgusting, it’s not the only bad part of BfA PvP.

They’d have to work out the numbers but I’m thinking the same CD as it is now (25 secs), decay of 5-10% per second for 15 seconds. If you take the higher value that’s a 150% decreased effiency over 15 seconds. Problem is atm it’s a 30 sec duration and 25 sec CD. I think PvE mages would be annoyed with it dropping to 15 sec duration but that would be my ideal.

If they keep their 25sec cd for absoring as much as my 2min cd Shield of Vengeance, they should have 6-10sec duration.
If they want to keep the long duration and short cooldown it should just absorb way less.
Also Alter Time being 10sec is gonna be way too long of a duration. Healer get into cc? Alter Time right away at high health and you have 10sec to press it back to go back to 100% health. Way too forgiving, should be 4 sec.

Everyone is toxic in bfa. and it’s actually my class too. This proposed change is just random. No one is complaining about mage barriers after the nerf, and this really wouldn’t make mage barrier more engaging. Mages would still just throw barrier on themselves 90% of the time off cd, because they get trained 90% of the time.
I understand what you’re saying and that’s why Blizzard nerfed barriers. As of right now, my mage barrier IIRC is a 25 second CD, and absorbs like 2 abilities from a melee. I don’t use my shield unless I am being bursted because it feels like a waste and with it having a 25 second CD I feel stupid if I use it just cuz they’re hitting me or whatever. I’d rather save it for the burst damage to absorb as much of that as possible. I do agree though that before the nerf was put into effect it was broken. Especially with Resounding Protection and Eldritch Warding when they weren’t nerfed by 80% yet. On my alt mage with relatively low corruption and only 25% versatility I can tell you that I feel super squishy when I’m being attacked by another player, even with barrier up.
I think my mage barrier in PvP now only absorbs like 60k? I will check both my main mage and my alt mage in a few minutes and report back on my findings!
