for any experienced mages out there, I have a question on the Ignite talent. Let’s say you get 2 ignites before the first ignite wears off. Does the new ignite just over-ride the old ignite - Does it add on top of the old ignite or are there multiple ignite dots now ticking on the mob?

It adds on, but depletes with each tick. If you want to know more about how it works I would suggest joining the mage discord.

Ok now I’m even more confused, it sounds like it adds on, but with some diminishing returns, basically?

Your crits contribute to a “bank” which depletes every time ignite ticks. If it’s a fresh ignite (your first crit), it will deplete over 2 ticks. When you crit when you already have an ignite active, it adds the ignite to the “bank” which then depletes over 3 ticks.

So if you crit for 10k, you will have a 4k ignite bank depleting over 2 ticks. If you crit your next fireball 2.5 seconds later for 10k again, your first ignite will have ticked once for half of the bank amount, leaving 2k remaining, and your 2nd fireball crit would add another 4k to the bank, making it 6k, which would deplete over 3 ticks for 2k each. Hope that makes some sense.

You get 2 ignite ticks per crit, each doing 20% of the spell’s initial damage. So, if you crit while ignite is up, think of it as 2 ignite ticks going off at the same time (with the damage added together for that tick). The rolling ignites from vanilla that just kept building forever are gone.

So, in lamens terms, if you get a new crit while a ignite is rolling, you are only dealing 20% of the new spells damage over 4 seconds, instead of the 40%?

No.

The tl;dr is that every time you crit, you get to deal 40% of that crit’s damage (before accounting for your mastery) as DoT. The exact details of when that damage occurs are what gets a little complicated, but it’s always the same amount of damage.

Let’s say I crit for 100. There is now a 40-point ignite.
Ignite ticks once, dealing 20 damage; 20 ignite remains.
I crit for 100 again, adding 40 ignite; 60 ignite remains.
Ignite ticks for 30; 30 ignite remains.
No crit, ignite deals 30 more damage and ends.

Two crits for 100 each added 40 damage, and a total of 80 damage was dealt over 3 ticks.
