Sparked by the recent “Hunter rolls need on cruel barb” thread, I thought I would organize some ideas that I think are pretty standard rules of loot in classic.
Assuming everyone goes dps spec to level, you can assume the follow things.
Warriors will need on almost all 1h/2h weapons, assuming the dps is higher than the one they already have. They will also roll on leather, mail, and eventually plate, as long as the stats are better than what they have. Yes, deviate leggings are an upgrade for most low level warriors and they will roll on them.
Shaman and paladins will also mostly roll on all 1h/2h weapons that are an upgrade to them, as well as cloth, leather, mail, and for paladins, plate. Even if they are healing the instance, you can assume they will roll for dps gear. They may even roll on int cloth gear, but I think , unless you’re dedicated to only healing and you’ve told your group beforehand, this is generally not taken as a good thing.
Priests, Warlocks, and Mages will roll on things with int, spirit and stamina, as well as the few items that have spell power or healing on them.
Druids and rogues will usually roll on leather dps gear, even if the druid is healing, expect him or her to roll on dps gear. Rogues will usually not level with daggers, as getting backstabs are really only useful for pvp and late game pve, so expect them to roll on all maces and swords that are higher dps than what they currently have.
Hunters will roll on everything, this stereotype exists for a reason. But since melee weapons are more or less stat sticks, it is good karma to pass on melee weapons and be given favor on ranged weapons. This trade will come in handy as a hunter in LBRS when the +hit (cross?)bow drops. If you’ve been a good boy and given all the melee weapons to melee, then more than likely you’ll be given this bow when it drops, even though it’s also bis for warriors and rogues. Expect them to also roll on leather and mail gear, even when they can use mail.
I hope this helps newer players to understand why a warrior would roll on leather, or a shaman on cloth.
