Just started Dragonflight a couple of weeks ago. I have been playing off and on since 2004. I cannot grasp dragon flying. it is not like any other flying in WOW. The mechanics are confusing, as I can never stay airborne for any length of time. Thanks
Get all the dragon riding skills. Invest about 30 mins doing it. Makes your life so much easier. There are alot of YT guides out there.
With your mouse, if you hold down the right button, this can allow you to turn and point yourself, and on your computer, I think space bar is automatically bound to the fly up. So what I do is I always hold down the right mouse button while dragonflying as my way to “steer” and then I also bound surge forward to 1 and the skyward ascension to 2, so I am pressing 1 and 2 to speed up or move up and the right button on my mouse to set the direction. You can also get dragonflying glyphs by collecting those around the isles which make dragonflying much easier. They’re like coins in the air that you fly through and you start unlocking dragonflying knowledge.

When you press skyward ascent make sure you angle your camera upwards first to maximize your lift. Then point your dragon so it is going at a slight downward angle. Repeat this as necessary to climb.
Until you get more dragonriding glyphs you won’t really want to use surge very much. You’ll need your vigor.
As you are learning and practicing, in the meantime you can also use the flightpoints on the isles as well.
collecting as many glyphs as you can, will make a huge difference
Try and get all the glyphs as Rita linked. They will give you more vigor so you can stay airborne longer.
Some of them are up really high, you could ask someone for help to get up there.
did they add the toggle yet where you can old school fly?
I came back for dragon flight, took a multi-year break. What messed me up was I didn’t know I could upgrade my dragon flight. So I was literally stuck at three or four vigor for weeks before I figured it out. I was so confused why everyone was able to fly so high and do so many things, but once I figured out how to upgrade my dragon riding, it became super easy.
What I do is aim where I want to go on the map, look straight up and use my space bar to fly as high as humanly possible, using all of my vigor, and then turn my camera to the side so I can see my dragon. You want to be going at the slightest downward angle until you start seeing the buff for increasing your vigor recharge rate. I forget what it’s called, sorry. Once you see that, you will regenerate your vigor very quickly, and then you can use ascent again to increase your height.
Thanks to all of you for your help. I did not know about flying glyphs. I will have to look them up.
There are some good YouTube videos out there on how to get them without landing. So that may also help with practicing dragonriding.
Just keep in mind you’re mostly only using one button: Skyward Ascent. Point yourself straight up, hit Skyward Ascent, even out and point yourself slightly down to keep momentum. Rinse, repeat.
Once you get more Vigor, this will become much easier.
Yeah, that’d do it. Dragonflying is pretty trivial once you’ve got everything, and impossible to sustain if you don’t.
Once you have all those, it will make things 10x easier
When taking off you need to hit “Skyward Ascent” or the space bar, 3 times until you get “Thrill of the skies” and your vigor is recharging (you will see a bluish airflow around your wings). Then you nose down a little bit to maintain the buff, and each time you recover one vigor you hit the space bar again, to go up and then nose down slightly. You just keep doing that and you can basically fly across the entire island within a certain altitude.
Sometimes you can wait until 2 vigor recharge to hit ascent. And sometimes if you’re going “uphill” you may have to hit skyward twice while in flight to keep the buff.
TomCat tours is a handy addon for this, it puts an icon on the map to show each one’s location.
This is the best advice I can imagine. Mouse work is crucial to make sure you’re pointing slightly downwards at all times. Left click and drag you’re camera to the side to see your downward angle. Also if you’re pointed downward with, you’ll recharge vigor through a buff that pops up. But there’s also an add on to track the glyphs you haven’t collected yet, so you can get enough to max out your dragon riding skill tree in under an hour. Having all the skills makes it so much easier when you apply the tricks the quoted poster mentioned.
Have you ever played Star Fox?
Get all the Glyphs.
Get the Dragon Riding weakaura.
Remember you’re gliding. Hit the Space Bar to boost your height and swoop!
Also recommend holding down your right mouse-button and using your mouse to steer, it makes flying that much easier.
I too returned to dragonflight after a long hiatus (7.5 years). I also hated and wanted dragonriding to go away and let me fly like I remembered. You’ll change your mind when you get the glyphs. There are addons that will steer you directly to them. I’d do this now! Pause leveling and get it done first. You’ll grow to love it. The only downside is you can’t just hover afk. Everything else is a huge improvement.
it’s as simple as spelling a b c. it tells you exactly what to do from the start. hit the button that jumps up and you immediately start flying until you can’t. And there are only a few buttons to even hit while flying to help you with speed.
How dragon riding is confusing I have no idea.
Also, what others said. Look at a guide to get all the glyphs to make your dragon epicsauce! Also, we’ve had to ground mount in every expansion while leveling until DF so I could care less if it starts off slow without all the glyphs. Flying is a bonus while leveling for the first time ever.
