Looking for some serious help

Not sure if you have dragon riding figured out but this map helped me a LOT because it shows the location of all the glyphs:

It comes from this website that does a good job at explaining the glyphs, and the achievement.

A second resource:

Good ole Wowhead is helpful:

I hope that helps you get started. Also, if you have motion sickness (like me) there are ways to change your settings to accommodate that too.

One tip i always give is remember hit space from time to time while looking up to maintain the speed, i see or watch others fly some times and they either over use the gust forward or over use the large speed boost and they don’t seem to understand they are losing resource and gaining next to no extra speed. You want a slight downwards angle from horizontal, and to start off any long flight you want to at least use three points in an upward flight path aiming not directly into the sky but as close to a 60degree or even 65 degree angle.

Best method i find is (if not starting from a high point): If starting from ground, double jump while looking slightly up, hit jump again after 2 seconds then again after 2 seconds, this will keep the vigor regen’ing while starting your flight off (a great indicator if you are doing it right is after you skyward accent which is the jump button you see a blue glow a half second after that glow you hit jump again this gets you the most vigor regen while rising into the sky). After that you want to level out your flight either close to horizontal if you want control or more aimed to the ground if you want to maintain max speed, to hold max you don’t actually need to look down that much from horizontal at all. From there you can either hit Surge forward if you want to maintain speed if you are making slight adjustments/turning after a turn to regain speed, or again hit accent two times like i said for your starter this will gain you more speed than using surge forward most of the time. Whirling Surge is the biggest vigor trap for most people though, it is a skill that will max you out on speed instantly but it gives you only a minor push forward compared to using the same amount of vigor properly using surge forward instead and angling your flight just right.

Never boost while turning also, it gives you next to no boost in speed. Take the turn and once you have leveled out you then hit the surge forward. If you know you are going to maintain a straight for a long period after a turn THEN you can use Whirling surge because that is the only time you will see the best benefit from it outside of hitting air brake then using Whirling surge. But that is just advanced flying really nothing you need to care about if you are just normally messing around getting from point to point.

Once you get the hang of the flying you will really start enjoying it, being able to glide down close to the ground and do fly bys on things as you explore is so damn cool.

EDIT: oh i should have explained it before. But going up is the fastest speed you can obtain on the mount, you can get to 1400% speed going up which is why if you use vigor for upward mobility then get a nice downward angle you can maintain max vigor while also hitting 900% constant forward speed. So up is king compared to wasting on forward surges.

I’m going repeat and add on to what everyone else has said.

  • GLYPHS ARE IMPERATIVE! Get all of them first! Definitely get one of the Addons that mark the locations on your map, and they’ll disappear off the map as you collect them. Check out some of the YouTube videos so you know what they look like (Gold floating medallions in the sky (sometimes in towers or ruins), how to collect them (fly through them), and their specific locations (on top of a tower, or inside it.)
  • There are currently 64 total: 48 in the four main Dragon Isles zones, 8 in The Forbidden Reach, and 8 in Zaralek Caverns. (It won’t be surprising if we see more when we get the new zone in 10.2.)

Handy Notes addin with the appropriate plugin will help locate all the glyphs.

For me cracking the dragon flying nut had to do with how I had my action bars set up and which one gets the posess function (like when you get in a turret or similar).

I had to resort to an add on like Bartender to let me pick which bar got that. Once I did that dragon riding became much more fun.

Did you get all your coins in the air so you can select the bonus skills? Those make a huge difference.

You guys have all been great and very helpful. It is really appreciated .

Get a friend who has been playing awhile to let you ride as a passenger and take you through to get the glyphs. Pay attention to uow he flies as he takes you around

I will also add that you don’t need every single glyph. You really just need enough to get your vigor all the way up. The rest are just icing on the cake. Once your vigor is at max, you’ll have no problems at all.

Wow! Thank you for this post. Very helpful.

Basic tips to gain momentum:

  1. whenever possible, fly straight down
  2. if at a low altitude, aim straight up (or more accurately about 60 degrees up from the ground) and use skyward ascent twice
  3. use the dash (I forget the name) to maintain momentum otherwise

Get your glyphs. It makes staying airborne without trying a lot easier.

But also, the upward boost ability is OP and is by far the best thing to use if you want to stay in the air longer. You can aim upward for the whole duration of the boost and not lose momentum as long as you tilt back down before it ends. So you just get a LOT of both forward and vertical movement out of it. Definitely don’t just spam 1 (unless you’re starting from a very high point).

I’m getting serious nostalgia pangs reading this thread and thinking back to the first days in DF … it’s been a long year.

(I have nothing to add that hasn’t been said already - expect maybe that with all the new glyphs that have been added over the patches, leave the side branches of the talent tree to last. You want that bottom row of talents (beyond infinity, yearning for the sky, at home aloft) … they make a huge difference how dragonflying feels).
