I don’t think they’re elves or trolls or a missing link between the two. If they are, they’re an evolutionary offshoot.
Because they have quills, and neither elves nor trolls have quills.

My guess is the DnD High Elf archetype often has Paladins. And in a WoW standpoint, it would be Arator being a Half Elf Paladin as one of the big major High Elf anything characters.
For me, I was satisfied when they got human skin and hair colors, lol. But based on some of the people on these forums. They won’t be happy even IF Entropic Embrace as a complete toggle, and they had Paladins and Druids.
Granted, I’d still like/want Paladins for Void Elves. I’m just saying I don’t think the High Elf want will ever go away, unless they get thier own nameplate.
It was a retcon a LONG time ago now. But yeah.
A big group of Dark Trolls, were guided by a Loa (presumably Quonzo the Loa of Change) to the Well of Eternity. The blood of Azeroth in the water, and it’s strong levels of Arcane/Order magic. Eventually evolved the Dark Trolls into Night Elves.
And apparently Arcane/Order magic in high concentrations (which the Blood of Azeroth has), is known to do this. It turned the Dragons into what they are now, instead of just Proto-Drakes.

To me, they look like a feral version of night elves, kinda what i expected night elves to be based on the original cinematic for WoW.
Honestly they look a bit too well fed to be a “wild and feral offshoot” of night elves or trolls.
But isn’t the hunter-druid path something all hunters go through? 
Holy cow the female looks like her shoulders have been crunched together in a vise…
