Long downtime today

Is the long downtime for all versions or just Retail?

I heard it has to do with SoD and since Anniversary runs on the same hardware it’s down too. I’m not positive though.

That makes sense, thanks.

Classic Anniversary says it will be down from 7am-3pm (Pacific) so for me, thats 10am to 6pm. It would be interesting for someone with inside knowledge to elaborate on why a 20+ year old game needs periodic maintenance that lasts a full day. I have no IT background, so i’m just yelling at the sky

edit: spelling

You know if they were interested in customer service, maybe do these types of patches from Midnight to Eight AM? But then again, why bother when you’re business model is “mo money mo money” and not customer service.

rumor has it that Naxx is getting patched in for SoD.

the length of time is likely reflective of the testing requirements to make sure the launch is smooth this time around.

They need the extra time to find some interns that are actually part of the dev team. Last time they tried to do something on time and put a 20 year old bg into the game they broke it for 14 hours.

I don’t play SoD, so this is kinda of a bummer man. Justice for Anniversary realms!

Yeah i heard about the AV nonsense with SoD players being mixed in with Anniversary BG’s. Oops? How do you miss that detail?

I haven’t played SOD in forever so I had no clue about the updates for it. Thanks for everyone’s input.

I think we’ve all kind of given up on that fight. It’s been like this since 2004 for whatever reason.

Retail’s downtime is only an hour. Totally normal.

“20+ year old game” assuming they’ve never updated the code that could be your answer. However, this isn’t a healthcare system so they don’t really have a need for 99.99% uptime (not a good excuse). Could also be updating their systems during a period of longer downtime because of “a large patch” that way they don’t need to take another longer downtime in a month (updating things like OS, DB, etc). Also, internal testing of the service they released to prevent the chance of rolling things back 45 minutes after letting people on to then take things down again to fix an issue they might’ve caught taking a longer downtime. sorry for the word vomit.

HELLO? IS THE SERVERS REALLY GOING DOWN FOR EIGHT WHOLE HOURS? ARE WE IN 2010 still

retail is just normal downtime the launcher says, 7 to 8 am

Oh, I don’t doubt that they update code between actual patches. I don’t know any specific coding language but I do have some professional experience with helping to troubleshoot software updates as a key user in my company’s CAD/PDM suite.

Like I said, I have no idea what the scope of their work is for weekly maintenance. It just appears to the lamen such as myself that, with classic servers, the code should be ready to go since those patches were released to live servers 20 years ago. Any issues were hotfixed back then, so the revised iteration of those patches is more or less bulletproof.

The need for real time preliminary testing before releasing the servers back to a live status, which is our (end users) primary guess when it comes to why it would take an entire day of down time, is frustrating. In my original post, I just mentioned it would be nice to hear a blizzard employee explain why scheduled extended downtime is a normal practice in 2025 on classic servers.

Crossing my fingers anniversary classic servers are up in 10 minutes

Blizzard, “Hey guys I know that a handful of employees don’t want to work a night shift for this patch, and we might have to pay them time and half, which would cut into our billion dollar profits, so why don’t we just release this during the day when millions of players will be inconvenienced?” Customers, “Yeah that sounds about right.”
