Sorry, what part doesn’t matter? That they do provide reimbursement for extended down-times?

If they fix an issue in under an hour…how would you like those pennies deposited exactly? If it’s a ddos attack, shouldn’t you go after those who are the attackers for your missed game time when it’s a DDOS attack??

DDOS attacks would most likely not happen, or at least happen a lot less if a company was in good standing in the gaming community. With that said…why does steam or epic games never seem to get affected by DDOS attacks? Every time Blizzard is, its impossible to log in

thank god im not alone!

Since Tuesday this is the 2nd or 3rd time I have had issues trying to log in to the game. Thats in three and a half days of time with that many log in related issues.

I wonder if that’s a cumulative or consecutive calculation. In the SaaS world, SLA of 99.9% allows for 43 minutes of cumulative downtime per month, but with WoW that’s blown away by any given Tuesday. A 99% SLA allows for 7 hours 12 minutes of downtime per month, which is about 2-3 Tuesdays. 99% or less would be a terrible SLA compared to other SaaS products, with things like Microsoft 365, Dropbox, and Zoom offering 99.9%. Slack offers 99.99% and I had the privilege of helping set that up. All of those (except better-than-Pro plans of Zoom) are cheaper than WoW per month.

Don’t mind me. I’m just riffing since I can’t play WoW right now. Hey Blizz: Let me know if you need an experienced SRE with a specialty in incident and outage management. I’m not doing anything else.

It’s more likely people who want to disrupt NA’s progress to the Race to World First for the raid or RMT sellers mad at a ban wave.

Because of their bandwidth for the amount of users they can have online at a single time. Steam can have something like 300 million people on at a given time.

You have to look at DDOS attacks like a highway traffic jam. Some companies like steam have these massive 20+ lane superhighways you see in China while Blizzard has 5 lanes. Blizzard doesn’t need to accommodate 200+ million people on at the same time that’s overkill and adding unreasonable costs.

ddos can be mitigated if the company will spend the money on infrastructure/bandwidth and have competent IT support. Blizzard obviously is not going to spend the money to improve their service as they couldn’t care less about their customers, they only care about appeasing the executives and shareholders.

If theyre DDOSd this often maybe they should so that people can actually log into the game that theyre subscribed to. I dont have any subscription based games on steam, its less frustrating if it happened on a game I wasnt paying for time on.

Is the only factor to mitigate/prevent DDOS attacks. Their IT support is pretty competent.

Blizzard doesn’t need the bandwidth for 50+ million players online at the same time on NA. It adds unnecessary costs.

You have to look at what else is going on at the time of DDOS attacks.

The reason for the recent DDOS attacks are likely because of the Race to World First or RMT sellers mad at a ban wave.

I’m sure if it’s in regards to the RWF once it’s finished we won’t be seeing any for a while.

…Umm do you not remember all the DDOS attacks that brought them down for hours during last seasons race to Mythic? They need to start bans for these teams that throw a hissy fit when another guild surpasses them in the race. Only way these are going to stop. All the attacks last season stopped after the race was over, wake up Blizzard they are connected.

I’m not exactly “on Blizzard’s side” on this, but I’m going to offer you some resistance to this perception.

DDOS acts can happen for all sorts of reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of the product. A gamer could have a personal slight against the game or other players against the game. A company could have a competitive attack because they want people to be involved in something else (maybe a ByteDance or TenCent property) instead of a Microsoft/Blizzard property. A competing nation state could want American-owned properties to lose value or market share. Hacktivist groups could be sponsoring a DDoS to protest some political alignment of the owning company. Or someone could just be doing it for lulz.

You may be right, but I would say it’s NOT the most likely not the cause of a DDoS. In recent years, the more likely sources of DDoS attacks come from organized (and often funded) groups with a political or financial stake.

Doubtful. Blizzard and WoW have been targeted by DDOS attacks at varying points since launch. Why weren’t the DDOS attacks happening 4-6 weeks ago? Because there was little reason to. The difference now is that there’s a new season and the RWF stuff going on so DDOSing right now would impact far more people if they are trying to troll.

Even games that have “good standing in the gaming community” have been DDOSed.

I don’t care what the reason is… I want to play the game that I pay time to play. They should switch over to using steam if they have this many issues with DDOS. Now I don’t get to play today because of this…which has already happened this week already before.

In 20+ years, the admins at Blizzard haven’t figured out how to mitigate a ddos attack or is that just the excuse to roll out when they broke something?

No place in the world is magically immune to DDoS attacks. There’s no foolproof way that’d stop such whatsoever forever.
