Most content isn’t even relevant anymore. Most of the world isn’t traveled, professions don’t matter, etc. It’s nonsense! A new expansion comes out? Everything from the last one isn’t needed anymore. Instead of completely new stuff, Blizzard needs to carry over some stuff from the last expansion. IE Burning Crusade mats and end products being used for, say, WoD. Kind of like an upgrade system. Do like they’re doing now and make the old areas relevant again. Make a reason to quest again, instead of grinding dungeons to max level for “Real Content”. It feels like they throw old content in the trash.
Ultimately I like the current game more than I think I’ll like classic when it comes out.
But I will confess, I do miss some things. I miss leveling lockpicking on my rogue and brewing poisons. I miss some of the vanilla storylines. In particular, the quests The Great Masquerade unmasking Onyxia in Stormwind, and In Dreams, the conclusion to Tirion’s questline in the Plaguelands. Those were great stories that for me are sorely missed in Cata onward.
I loved Vanilla back in the day, but don’t think it will be for me. For all the little things I miss like the above examples, there are other areas I think the game has made great improvements on. But that said, I can understand why some people would prefer vanilla and I don’t think it’s all because of nostalgia.
BS… Resistance gear and moneymaking make them relevant. They also make some gear that is BiS up until naxx. You absolutely need Leatherworkers and Blacksmithers for AQ.
Also, gearing up in Vanilla is a significantly slower process.
LW and BS are low-key extremely profitable. LW, I would say, is the most profitable profession unless you are the guild enchanter.
Engineering has it’s own utility…
Everyone is always consuming potions…
And people always need enchants.
Yeah, they’ve gone from expansions replacing content from earlier expansions, to patches completely replacing what came before them. Think about all that’s in WoW, and yet the only relevant content is the current patch.
They are going after a different demographic of gamer now. No more long term RPGers, they want the people who play for a couple of months and quit until the next content release.
I believe they’ve actually kind of said that. I recall a Blue post, or an Ion interview or something where they basically said they expect players to quit and return when new content is available. So the game is built that way. Which explains why catch-up mechanics have run amok.
I would say this kind of mmo design is failing them. The Vanilla style of substantial time investment and commitment means players become attached to their characters, and feel a sense of progression and achievement. The things you do have value and won’t immediately be negated the next patch.
I can’t wait for professions that are useful from the minute you pick them up. I’ll probably make an army of alts just to be able to do all of the professions
