All writing is “randomly made up”, sometimes character development comes out of left field but it does no harm to the character’s story and allows for new and interesting developments so it’s not really an issue. So she’s trans, cool.
What is interesting about that other than setting the precedent that biological women must have feminine names.
Edit: The literal mindset behind the change was to the effect: “Huh, ormu is usually the suffix for male bronze dragons…Chromie mUsT bIoLoGiCaLly Be A gUy!!!”
What next? Are they going to retcon a character to be a specific gender identity or sexuality because of the clothes they wear? The way they talk?
I mean that’s not true, I used to date a guy named Claire.
But, people who are assigned male at birth and look to transition often choose stereotypically feminine names, or they name themselves after flowers it’s one or the other. I am obviously joking, I know many people who pick nonbinary names as well like “Jamie”.
Heck, I’m amab and the name I chose isn’t really female at all so like… yeah.
The point more is that trans folk are just… folk. There’s nothing really special about her or Pelagos, it’s just a part of who they are.
And you see no reason why it’s an uncomfortable mentality if someone arbitrarily decided Claire was actually female to male trans, just because his name was Claire?
[Yes, I know that for a long time, Claire was actually only a guy’s name and it’s only in the modern, Post WWII-ish era that it became mostly a woman’s name.]
Actually, I’d normally ask someone whose name was Claire who was clearly male presenting what name and pronouns they wanted me to use, yes. Because either they are trans and haven’t chosen a new name, they’re trans and haven’t started presenting as female, or their parents are jerks.
They can think whatever they want but they don’t get to decide that, only he does. Besides, it makes no difference. People aren’t defined by their names or their genders, only they get to decide who they are.
See, you’re already making assumptions on someone’s gender and identity just because of their name and it not matching up with your preconceived notions.
Assuming based on my history of interacting with friends and found family in the LGBT community that when in doubt it is best to get clarification, absolutely.
Except Chromie’s gender was literally decided, after the fact, because of her name and name alone.
They didn’t go “Hey, we want to add in a trans character, but don’t want to work at making them likeable or have traction, so let’s just retcon an existing popular character” or “you know, it’d be interesting to add more diversity to world of warcraft and dragons are always popular, how about we do a trans dragon character since they can, you know, naturally shapeshift”.
Some writer went, “Hey, that character’s name doesn’t match my preconceived notions of gender roles and gender identities, so let’s just fix that, mmmm’kaaay.”
For some reason I read this as LGBT Checkers when glancing over the threads. Just thought I’d share.
A LGBT checkers board would be an amusing product I’d like to see concepts for.
I thought Claire could be short for Clarence?
I think the reasoning is less insidious than that… to me it comes across as more of a… “oh shoot Chromamu is a male name and she’s a female gnome uhhhhh… she’s trans then?” “Ok, cool. That works.”
Claire was also just a male name for the longest time. Coming from either French or Irish roots, I believe. Also was done as Clair.
Nope his name was Claire and he dyed his hair. It was always red…
I don’t get it.
Yeah, I don’t get that either.
It could be, yes. At which point Claire’s answer here is “Claire, he/him” and we move on with life. But clearly there’s a story as to why he’s going by “Claire” rather than his full name, middle name, or a nickname whether he wants to tell me or not.
Just a funny rhyme… he always dyed his hair red so we called him Claire with the dyed hair.
You understand you said exactly what I said, just in more realistic speech patterns, right?
