Has anyone on the game development team leveled a retail rogue from level 1 recently?
I would genuinely like to know if someone at Blizzard has tested this, and thought… “This feels great, very fun”
I guess I just kind of feel like there isn’t anyone that plays this class on the development team at all. Could someone prove me wrong?

Prove you wrong that they don’t test because it’s fun?
Not sure it’s possible to prove that wrong. Is it even a that?

I don’t think anyone has leveled this class at Blizzard. You stay energy starved, can barely handle anything, scaling is beyond awful. Low levels are auto attacking while watching energy and health stay low.
Someone needs to go back to the drawing board with this.

I wouldn’t touch a level 1 Rogue unless it had heirloom weapons scaling up to 80. Their dependency on gear is actually insane.

Its a combination of gear ilvl scaling being awful while leveling (most likely to push boosts - its been bad for so long, there is no other reason.) and the class just straight not working well without talents etc.
The class needs a overhaul with its resources: energy, and combo points. or the talents that generate them need to be baked into the class baseline.

I haven’t leveled one myself since WoTLK. I’m considering it though, Outlaw looks kind of fun.

If I had to address it, I would give them some type of baseline ability that just hits hard af on a CD, I think that’s what they’re lacking. Everything they do seems to be tied to combo points from 30 years ago or like a poison or something.
Or maybe they need something like Feral has where you just straight up press a button for more global damage.
i can’t think of any class that starts out fun at level 1.

I had a ton of fun leveling my rogue. You have the option of stealthing around brutally ganking your enemies, or going headlong into the fray and wiping out groups of mobs like a ninja badas. You might be playing it wrong if you’re struggling at lot.

I just leveled my rogue from 80-90, and it was painful. It makes me sad because it was my original main all the way back to beta.
I can’t even bring myself to try to gear it, it’s just not fun compared to other classes anymore.

I tried Feral recently and it was more fun. It’s innovation vs stagnation, straight up. Should put a picture of Rogues in the dictionary under “stagnation”.

Sounds like you are talking about level 80-90 when you have abilities and your AoE actually does damage.
the class doesn’t function well at all until 70+ if not higher.
They get slice and dice for faster auto attack damage at low levels because that’s about all you do.

Leveled one from 50 to 80 recently, and it was … yeah, wonky.
Most of the “group” quests you can kinda cheese on most classes, but I found out quickly Sub Rogue was not one of them. lol
It’s been forever since I found leveling actually challenging … but not in a good way, more in a “this feels oddly designed” way.
Maybe the other specs aren’t as bad, but aside from the fun of getting to stealth through practically anything, Sub felt pretty bad. If you pull an extra mob or two, you’re kinda boned. XP
The class blows, period. The inept regime in place will not fix it.

Rogues have some of the roughest first few levels in the game due to the severe weakness of their base kit. Each of the specs is basically nonfunctional until 20 or so (arguably more like 30 for Subtlety), because what they start with barely applies to what they’re supposed to become.
After that they’re okay, but not great.
Solo gearing a rogue was the fastest of any of my characters, especially in delves. Val as DPS. Use the hero talent that makes tricks an hr. Off you go. I used Sub to gear, but I’m sure the other 2 would be fine.
The problem with Rogues through a leveling perspective is their energy economy is terrible because the most beneficial/managing energy talents are at the very, very bottom of the general tree.
Subtlety is probably the best to level with because of its mechanics, and it has magic damage.
Sin is the middle child because even though its energy regen is horrid it still has Poisons and Bleeds.
Outlaw, ironically enough, is the worst leveling spec for Rogues. Never, ever try leveling an Outlaw Rogue unless you’re a trained professional with a therapist on speed dial.

Sub is awful till mid levels. Sin also deals nature damage and bleeds which tick while you are auto attacking. It’s energy regen is better than subs at low levels.
50 more energy and 20% regen out of the gate is nice.
Sin is the spec you want overall for leveling until Midnight then switch to sub if a dot spec is not for you.
I leveled a Rogue through Legion Remix, does that count?
