It’s kind of shocking to me this hasn’t been implemented yet. I guess Blizzard are a little gunshy after the enormous failure of Garrisons but this is so different it’s still weird they haven’t taken a crack at it.
I’d love to see this implemented. Here’s some reasons why.
New system + content to entertain players for endless hours
Can tie into many professions
Can tie into reps/factions
Can tie into old content
Solo players can have a basement to hide in just like real life
Huge injection of cashflow, items and activity into the AH
New appearances and items to grind, of course
New social aspect of the game to share with friends/guildies
You could even add a new profession like carpentry/construction to launch with it.
The trick to making it not suck is you don’t load it with 1,000 daily chores to do or set it up as a one-stop-shop to do everything in the game – like Garrisons. I know there are people who just hate change even though they’re always complaining about how they want something changed specifically for them but here is the beauty of this style of content …
IT’S FREAKING OPTIONAL
Don’t like it? Cool, don’t use it. Your life doesn’t change at all. Have a great day.
Anyway, I think this would be really cool and I’m curious to hear other opinions so let’s talk about it. Constructively. Pun very much intended.
Ion has already said they are working on it in the long term. The amount of work is equivalent to a raid tier and in order to keep pace with releasing new content, they are going to slowly work on player housing over time.
Yes, but then we get a bunch of reclusive people just sitting in their homes all day and decorating and doing little home businesses like FFXIV. That and every time we get updates it’ll be player housing because you people need furniture. If you want a more solo player game then why don’t you play ffxiv?

People are already being antisocial because “that’s how they play the game.” This isn’t really an argument as far as I’m concerned. It’s content that will be used by both types of players. I also addressed that in the OP and you basically just said nothing more than “YEAH BUT SOLO PLAYERS BAD.” I don’t like solo players either, but they’re going to do that sh*t anyway. This isn’t going to affect you whatsoever.
Oh, that’s pretty cool. Do you have a link on that?
Players that do mythic+, PVP, and raiding will probably not be in their homes all day doing nothing. They want to progress more than anything. Besides, let’s think about it this way, once WOW dies and all the players actually doing content leave the game, the only thing this game will have left is the player housing people being reclusive.
It’s not designed for you to spend all your time doing it. It’s just another piece of the world to interact with when you’re not progressing. Not to mention casual players far outnumber hardcore pushers so the argument kind of dies right there anyway.
Once WOW Dies
Who cares? If it’s dead, there is no problem with what people want to do. You have still failed to point out how this affects you negatively. Because it doesn’t.
I don’t like the art style of ffxiv. I also don’t have the time to play another time-sink game. I also RP and player housing is an RPer’s dream!
Garrisons were like the very basic version of player housing. Blizz had stated we’d be able to chose the location of our garrison from a few different spots, but that never happened. They also mentioned there would be race themed architecture, but that didn’t happen. You got humans of SW castle for Alliance and the orc huts for Horde. I would LOVE it that if they add player housing, we could choose the architecture to fit our characters’ races or our personal favorite style.
Plus the players who like to collect mounts, mogs, battle pets, and achieves would enjoy this new collection added to the game of decorations, furniture, and such. Didn’t mean for this to be long buuuut I just REALLY want player housing!
Here are some estimates on general population of the game.
WowRealmPopulation statistics
EU characters in database: 5 036 860 of which 1 570 287 is currently considered being active within 2 week period.
EU guilds in database: 26 113 that have at least 10 members that are considered active within 2 week period.
US characters in database: 2 762 356 of which 867 691 is currently considered being active within 2 week period.
US guilds in database: 14 028 that have at least 10 members that are considered active within 2 week period.
Korean characters in database: 1 155 632 of which 79 583 is currently considered being active within 2 week period.
Korean guilds in database: 2 143 that have at least 5 members that are considered active within 2 week period.
Taiwanese characters in database: 1 103 872 of which 112 101 is currently considered being active within 2 week period.
Taiwanese guilds in database: 2 105 that have at least 5 members that are considered active within 2 week period.
And you also need to understand a considerable percentage of those (if not 50%+) are repeat runs by the same people AND a considerable percentage are low keys between 0-5. This is self-evident, go walk around Valdrakken and tell me how many people you see who have a noticeably high RIO score. Far less than those who don’t or have none at all.
Honestly as I get older, all I want to do is just decorate stuff, mow the lawn, and maybe fry an egg or two. Leave the world saving stuff for the youngsters.
This doesn’t happen nearly as often as you think it does in FFXIV, and having more social spaces to hang out in has never harmed a video game. If you could actually name one game where player housing actually harmed it, I’d be inclined to believe you, but 99% of the time these comments are rooted in falsehoods and assumptions.
Because player housing =/= solo housing. Plenty of games offer player housing for guilds. Having a hub for your guild to hang out in actually promotes social interaction.
My thoughts: phased housing in Stormwind/Org would be their best option. They could do a “housing island”, but since they are accustomed to phasing already, it makes sense to do that (like the garrison). Plus, phased housing in the capitals keeps people around, instead of shuttered away. For Stormwind, the phase could utilize unused houses in the districts and canals, with district houses costing more gold if you want one.
They could even go the “apartment” route, where you could purchase a house in most of the major cities. Every expansion could then add a handful of new houses at various gold points in the new capital city for players to work towards.
If Blizz were really ambitious, they could then introduce woodworking woodcutting to offer furniture… if the engine will support fully-customizable and moveable furniture. If not, they could have upgrade packages to buy, like new bedrooms, kitchens, etc. It would be a nice gold sink.
Fair, but my argument is still relevant, I think. Player housing is not just a solo experience and it doesn’t need to be. There hasn’t been an MMO that was harmed by the inclusion of player housing and there is no data to prove that.
This also isn’t true. FFXIV’s community is highly active in all facets of its game except maybe PvP. Also, the percentage of players clearing high-end content in FFXIV is higher than the percentage of people clearing high-end content in WoW.
same.
they can just instance it from some doors in stormwind and ogrimmar…or literally ANY door in the game, lol.
Make TONS of things for players to farm for to put inside.
It doesnt NEED to work like ESO where we can move furniture around that is kinda pointless. I know theyve argued they need to do something to the engine to make it like other games housing, but we dont need any of that.
Have fixed points where things go.
A dining table inthe kitchen. Sofa in the living area. spots on the walls to hang paintings. etc.
Just make it so we can remove one and replace it with another if we get something new. Make a collection tab like mounts, mogs and pets.
Also make it a free hearth back to the player house like ESO does.
Wouldn’t mind a new secondary profession like Carpentry that allows gathering of woods and creating items specifically for the house and toys / consumables for setting up camps outside in the world. Maybe a Survival profession which makes you good at camping.
