Are those forum posts from players that were suspended for actual violations or from players that were suspended for abusing the system?
Do you have any numbers to indicate how many, if any, of those submitting reports that led to squelch that was subsequently overturned when Blizzard determined there was no actual violation were punished?
Don’t keep a track of those, Blizzard does and they ain’t saying. Most people that got their squelches overturned don’t post. It’s only the ones that get punished that come whining to the CS forums.
I’ve numerous posts from people that were suspended for actual violations, but I have never seen a single post from someone who was suspended for abusing the right click report system in WOW.
I’m not saying there were no posts from people thst were suspended for abusing the right click report system in WOW, only that I have never seen any.
Perhaps you could provide quotes of some of those posts or links to them. I am curiois and would like to see them.
Actually i got one from in game didn’t go to rl but happen in game actually end of vanilla beginning of TBC. So in a guild I was in I met this who I think was a guy whatever seem cool enough we quested together etc no biggy. About a month in some girl messaged me in game on her char claiming to be dudes bf. I was like whatever didn’t want drama so I backed off mainly because well it wasn’t that serious just a gaming buddy to quest with.
Few week and he all like oh I talked to her blah blah im like whatever then he starts telling me how he actually works for blizzard and is GM and got her info because he doesn’t know who she is blah blah. At this point I smell BS on GM part so I keep my distance even call him out on it. That char soon disappears few weeks later a new female char messaging me talking about do I know so and so now claiming oh he some scammer he claimed to be a GM to her basically acting like we had something in common, now at this time that last girl and her I put on ignore. Suddenly he comes back with a new char has some long drawn story he had to change his name because said girl who messaged me was stalking him etc. Now I put him on ignore told him he was sketchy and ya I just want to play in peace, about a month later we invite some low level he said new at wow blah blah took a sudden interest in me thought nothing of it helped him quest etc. Few weeks pass now we are well into BC well he robbed the GB and took off. I found out after a long drawn out thing he or she was all of those char, different char, same person behind the char.
However back to topic again the feature is being made out to be much worse than it is. As with everything yes it can be abused any type of system in place can be abused. To abuse it require more work on the person as it some a single or even 2 or 3 people you need a group. That group has to be in the same zone as you meaning I in the barrens cant report someone in STV just by /who name and click. Everyone you bring to report them all has to report them for the same infraction, meaning one cant do name violation, another chat, someone else does harassment etc.
The most possible way is to have a group of people you know which if they aint in your zone they have to stop what they are doing fly over to you either find the person or wait for them to talk in chat, as chances are most random strangers aren’t gonna be like hey this random guy wants me to report some other random player sure why not. Point is ya it can be abused but you have to jump through a lot of hoops to make it work.
The issue here is that Blizzard doesn’t want to risk punishing the reporting player because the reporting player is the “victim”. There are probably cases were report abuse is completely black and white where Blizzard will address the issue. However I’d realistically expect the number of reporters who get punished for incorrectly interpreting the vague CoC/EULA to be much much lower than the false positives from RCR automatic silence.
It’s a standard case of don’t attack the messenger.
Many of those who desire that players have the option to collude to squelch any other player at any time claim that those who abuse the system will be punished. That may be true if the abuse clear and black and white, but the subjectivity of the system means that is rarely the case.
We’ve even had one poster who has a pet peeve about using /trade for things other than chat related to the buying oir selling of goods and services, even though Blizzard gas explicitly stated that is not a violation. That poster has practically admitted that he plans to abuse the system to enforce his pet peeve by colluding with other players to squelch anyone having the audacity to use /trade in a manner that Blizzard has explicitly stated is acceptable while using the grey area of “spam is reportable” to hide behind.
Now, how does Blizzard prove that abuse or should that player be able to collude with others to enforce his own set of rules?
This is just one example of why I oppose tying the right click report to an auto squelch for anything other than trying to sell illegal services.
You’re still not understanding the topic of conversation. This isn’t about who deserves punishment. This is about the volume of false punsihment that could go out in Classic, and the consequences it will have in Classic to innocent players, given you can’t play Classic like a single player game (as you can in Retail) as I’m sure you’re aware.
Communication is key in Classic, and a moment without that communication can alter gameplay and the experience. That’s what’s important- the experience of the average, rule-abiding player. That is who we have on our minds- not the jerks. Get that through your skull.
The people who think that’s what we’re saying don’t understand the problem at hand and probably think Classic is a mistake. Haha! Don’t worry about it fam- it’s obvious the flaws, and voicing feedback is key. Their comments are not feedback- Just misplaced frustration. They have an equal right to comment and keep the conversation going, and truth-be-told, they’re only highlighting our points by making generalizations that don’t quite match the topic, but barely touch on the theory behind Blizzard’s RCR system. So it’s all benefit for us! Keep them coming, I say!
Then why isn’t it? Why isn’t the general discussion forum or CS forum filled with people furious about getting DC’d from island excursions, battle grounds, etc. if it is so easy to target someone for a DC? People still take BG’s seriously, and if this was such an easy exploit, why isn’t rampant? Why hasn’t it been happening constantly for years?
