I mean… you can already realm transfer so, make name changes possible.
Yeah, I wish I could change the name of my warrior. May actually play it if I did.

I tried that. The GM noticed and gave me a warning.
Only way I’ll play my lock now is if I transfer to get rid of the stupid name I gave it.
I wish there was a way to free up old names that nobody uses.

Disagree. Boost just gets you to outland level for one character. Tokens literally create real world money demand for any in game item.
Living with the consequences of our own choices is so not 2021, amiright? Get with the times Blizz!

In retail at least, names should free up automatically after a bit. I’m not sure if the same system is in place for Classic though.

Paid Character Name Changes Now Available
We’re happy to announce that through the wonders of modern gnomish engineering, you are now able to change your characters’ names. Finally, you can turn the moniker that seemed like a good idea at the time into something more befitting your true standing in World of Warcraft.
Visit Account Management to begin the paid character-name-change process. The fee is $10 per name change. As with our recent addition of voice chat to the game, this feature is being rolled out across all realms in several phases.
Update: Paid character name changes are now available on all realms.

It would be one thing if I was asking for free name changes. I’m not. I’m asking to pay for the consequences of my actions. Real money. Profit for Blizzard. Close to no downside for the community at all since ninja looting is hardly a thing anymore and mega servers offer pretty much constant anonymity.
The community does not want you to get away from your bad reputation with your credit card. I’m sure you will argue you are trying to get away from a name chosen in haste rather than a bad reputation, but you are not the only person who would use this feature.

Name changes were in the game by this point in original TBC by the way (as others have pointed out) .
At this point we’re getting fairly extreme changes like boosts, meme mounts, toys, and same factions bg’s, yet we don’t even have features like name change and 30-day transfers that were actually in the game before.
The people saying the “community” doesn’t want people to get away from bad reputations and such are being hyper critical. Just because someone CAN use something for a bad purpose, doesn’t mean there aren’t many others who would use the service legitimately to change a name they don’t like.
I guess we should get rid of name changes IRL too because some bad guys might try to distance themselves from their reputation or even turn over a new leaf. So much for people changing names after marriage or because they just don’t like what their parents named them, we must keep track of the baddies!

The name change service was available for the original TBC tho!
Race changes, faction changes and transfers definately wern’t.
But Name change service would be good if Blizzard would purge taken, but inactive names. Especially after tbc launch and them making a copy of Classic era toons. Make it so that toons not activated to go to TBC, get their name reset. Names are super important in RP servers and its annoying as hell having good names taken by inactive users from back at 2019 classic pre-launch.
