Eh, I’m not sure about the players today being far more skilled part. Average joe has finally accepted that yes in fact keybinding is faster than clicking lol.
Kishkumen, Ming, Neilyo, Reckful, Dahis, Akrios, Grim… There were a lot of really good Rogues could pull off some cool stunts in 1vX PvP. I’m not going to mention them here, but there is a good Rogue on private servers who plays at that level and if they play Classic they have my vote as one of the best we’ve seen; worthy of adding them to my list above.
Warrior only had one good era for showing skill in the time period I played, and that was Seasons 7 and 8 in Wrath of the Lich King. BC was a decent period for us (with and without cheese), but I was a full time tank/raid leader and couldn’t justify the respec cost very often. As cathartic as it was to kill 4 people in a whirlwind with Ashkandi, I knew it was the gear doing the work and my friends keeping me up, not skill. We had a lot of good ones though through the years, Klinda/Clinda, Dahis, Laintime, Hoodrych, Raycharles, Geforce, Golrath, Thorrior, and probably a few I forgot (sry bros).
I will attempt to make a video but Wpvp mainly. I hate the whole twitch theme vids and bg’s. But also, that’s the beauty of not having Crossrealm bg’s because you are forced to fighting people in your server.
thats kinda how i felt (over powered ashkandi example) about resilence in tbc pvp gear. i was always heals. resilience was so good, i could actually survive to heal my team mates, pretty much continuously. if they do release tbc classic, it might be a good idea to revisit resilience and tamp it down a bit.
I didn’t really idolize anybody from videos. I watched the videos but I had no memory of their names.
Instead I looked at players on my server who were really good and had a lot of respect for them. I couldn’t look at the top horde guild on my server and respect them because most of them were edgelords, but the Alliance top guild had some people I really enjoyed. I ended up rolling Alliance because it was a better environment on my server, but then I couldn’t tear away from my old main so it took another full expansion to finally reroll.
I have family members who are into sports that get super salty when I say there’s a no named Joe out there who’s just naturally 10x better then their favorite athletes who go unnoticed simply because they have been or choose to be.
Well, that’s a bit less likely since sports naturally funnel people of more skill to places they’ll be recorded. A natural athlete in high school will get in the news or on TV, they’ll get scholarships to good colleges with more visibility, and so on.
Of course there’s probably ones in remote areas who never get into the news or move up to more prominent venues but that’s likely to be rare. Who wouldn’t take a free ride to college or a high-paying career in professional sports, at least for a little while?
In a game, however, the ones doing the recording are usually that player themselves - unless they are part of organized league play. So it’s much more likely that there are some amazing players out there, doing world PVP or PVE, grouping with a few people, but not recording the amazing things they are doing.
The ones posting the videos are most likely average or a bit above average but very good at making themselves look like rock stars by staging situations, cherry-picking recordings, and such. Not that all of them are like that, some may actually be great players. But somehow I think it’s more about showmanship than actual skill.
There weren’t a lot of great hunters back when. I had to mastercthe class with very little inspiration, both in PVE and PvP.
I do remember Dinan though! He kind of opened up my world from being a turret to really truly kiting. Of course my kiting style ended up way smoother than what he does in the video, but it’s the fact that he was one of the first people to be like, “Hey, try moving…” lol
