According to wowhead the official WoW website’s public source code showed strings for the Dragonflight Base, Heroic and Epic Expansion pre-purchases. It does fit with the 10.0 guess of dragons and World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, actually sounds pretty cool to me.
Wow, so many writers in the building and that’s the best name they could up with.
it is a bit peculiar as their are six major flights… unless they are retconing dragons to say there is some original primordial singular cosmic dragonflight or something.
As someone who likes WoW’s dragons this fills me with nothing but utter dread. The Danuser reaper is coming for Alexstrasza next, and I hate it.
The name’s fine though.
Eh, it’s a fair enough name. I doubt it’s referring to a specific “Dragonflight” in the WoW sense, but just the broad concept.
I’m still deeply skeptical that anything dragon-related could be interesting enough to drag WoW out of it’s slump.
From the writers of that one time Alexstrasza said she’d forgive her abusers comes an entire expansion probably about her.
I’m sure they won’t grossly mishandle her character after the bang up job they did with Sylvanas.
As the creator of the “Leave the Dragons Alone” club, I am both Concerned and vaguely interested.
That aside, does Blizzard have a trademark for it yet? Blizzard has been upping their game on hiding expansion titles and I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a placeholder name.
Blizzard also generated an SSL certificate for dragonflight.blizzard.com
on the 29th of march as well, for what that is worth. Earlier today purported box art also leaked as well.

It’s probably a coincidence because a lot of the stuff in this link sounds like either wish fulfillment or completely unrealistic, but it is worth noting that at the very least the guy who made this thread seems to have gotten the name right. And it’s from February.
I sure know how excited I am to play an expansion centered around Alexstrasza.
Yeah it’s pretty clearly a dragon expansion, but I meant more of a placeholder name like “Dragonflight” versus “Rise of the Dragonflights” kind of deal.

IF this is legit then it be the actual name. It came out basically within an hour or two of one another.
Which makes me wanna put on my tinfoil hat and think it is an accidental on purpose kind of leak to attempt and generate hype.
I kind of like the name. It is better than “Astral Skies”. I thought the name “Dragon Isles” would be too limiting as far as locations for events. Dragonflight is OK.
As far as what it means :
It could be seen as the Dragon term for “family”. Maybe we cozy up to a Flight and become members. And the expac is a deep dive into what being a “dragonflight” really means.
Or
Maybe it is literal, and the expac wil be about dragon flight. Like, we are given a dragon whelp, and it is the only creature that can fly in the Dragon Isles, and we have to fill up it’s experience bar throughout the expac to teach it how to fly and to keep it aloft. Sort of like a customizable companion and body guard and mount.
Six?
Red, green, bronze, black, blue, and who else? Am I forgetting one or are you including Infinites as their own flight?
Alextrasza as the NPC ‘guide’ of the expansion also would tie strongly into my suspicion the the cosmic force of Life is being explored this expansion as well.
Oh no, you are right, it is five. Somehow I got twilight mixed up in my head.
Netherwing always have a place in my heart, but they don’t have a Northrend Temple and likely don’t have a room at the Dragon Isles. Since they came later on. I wonder if we will be trying to bring them into the Dragon Family.
Wrathion could try to gather the Netherwing and Twilight together to forge a new black dragonflight, perhaps?
It’s alright. I kept getting the netherwing flight confused as a full flight up until about Cataclysm when I got upset that “Blizzard was forgetting them” amidst all the other flight stuff.
I could see it being an allusion to the rebirth of Dragonkind (taking flight), literal dragons flying, and the Dragonflights themselves. I’m hopelessly addicted to wordplay though, so I’m biased.
The Burning Legion expansion was called ‘Legion’. The expansion set in the Shadowlands was called ‘Shadowlands’.
I don’t think there’s some wordplay or deep meaning here. It’s just something simple so it’s memorable and easy to advertise. Same reason Disney movies have all been 1 word since Tangled.
