Laziest major new race in the history of the game

First off, I’m talking major, new, “box feature” races, not allied races. I’m talking races that were announced as selling points of their expansions, blood elves, draenei, pandaren, goblin, worgen, kul tiran, zandalari.
That out of the way, dracthyr are the laziest new race in the history of the game.

Visage forms are reskins

And barely even reskins at that. They’re literally just a male blood elf and a human female. You can give them pointy ears and scaly bits but, as they stand now, they will never read as anything but male blood elves and human females. They sure as hell won’t read as a new race or even members of the same race. I’m sure there’s a lot of nice customizations but it doesn’t change that this not only is lazy but also looks lazy.

If you’re going to use barely altered existing races for the visage form then give us a few races to choose from for our visage form. If you want the visage form to be a new race, put in the work to make a new race.

Dragon form can’t use mogging

The effort can be put in to make current armor work on dracthry dragon form (though I admit helms could be a problem). Pandaren, draenei, and vulpera (and maybe someday worgen :crossed_fingers:) have shown that tails aren’t impossible to make gear work with. Demon hunters have shown wings aren’t impossible to make gear work with. But, at the moment, it seems Blizz would rather not put in the effort. Instead we’ll only be able to mog belts, shoulders, and tabard. All other clothing options will be in the barber shop which means dragon form, the form most dracthyr players will be in the majority of the time, will have fewer mogging options than any other race or class outside of druid forms. There’s no way the barber shop will have as many clothing options as 18 years of gear, and how often do you think they’ll add new dracthyr clothing options to the barber shop, especially after the expansion ends?

The barber shop clothing options are fine, and it would be nice to keep that unique feature, but not putting in the effort to make mogging work on dragon form is going to be frustrating for players and more work down the line if you ever decide to fix it. Best to bite the bullet and make it work now.

Dragon form has only one body option

All the other playable races have two different body options to choose from. For those races the difference is male and female. Dracthyr don’t need to have male and female models but they should have two different model options. And, no, “slightly thicker torso options” doesn’t cut it. Let’s face it, making one body option for a race is both half the effort and half the choice. There’s really no way to pretend otherwise. And again, I’m sure there’s a lot of nifty cosmetic options, but that doesn’t change the fundamental one body problem.

Dragon form is a reskin too (or the incubus is a reskin of them, which is barely any better)

It appears the dracthyr dragon form is a reskin of the incubus warlock pet. If so, that means both the visage forms and the dragon form are reskins. An entirely reskinned race as a box feature is pretty, yeah, not great.

Now, it could be that the incubus is a reskinned dracthyr, but is that really any better? How would you feel as a worgen player if hunters had a reskinned worgen pet? What if mages had a reskinned draenei as their water elemental? I could be wrong, but I don’t think currently any class has a pet that’s just a reskin of a playable race. Until now, of course.

A reskinned warlock pet or warlocks have reskinned dracthyr, either way, not a good look. Frankly, a lazy look.

Bottom line, I like the concept of the dracthyr and I think Dragonflight has a lot of potential to be a lot of fun, but as it stands now, the dracthyr are underwhelming on some very fundamental levels. Here’s hoping that it’s still early days and they’ll put in the added effort to make them really great, or at least as good as any other box feature playable race from WoW’s past.

One word:

Neat

One thing I’ll say is, I heard they are adding body options for the Dracthyr dragon form, but I heard that here on GD so it may not be true. I am not fully paying attention to interviews just yet.

But everything else, I pretty much agree with. Although, I’m just not upset about it? I don’t really care. I will try out the Evoker class anyway. I’ll just have to settle for being ugly.

The real question is, what will their dance animations look like?

Maybe the scalies will do The Wyrm?

The only thing interesting to me as a long term wow subscriber is maybe how the game mechanics play out with each class and the new talent tree, the Dragon stuff I couldn’t care less about

Reusing content is a big thing when you are trying to move a game to maintenance mode.

It’s pretty fun.

Dragons do swing dancing? Oh, I guess they call it Wing dancing

UPDATE Human RIGS please. Both models and animations. I won’t accept FF14 having better humans than WoW.

It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that wing.

I’m not sure that I agree with Dracthyr being a reskin of incubus or vice versa being a problem, considering that they both had to be in production at the same time and litterally every other rig is shared between playable races and NPCs, it’s just the reality of game design to an extent.

Other than that I largely agree, the no mog thing is a big negative in my view. No amount of baked in customization can ever possibly make up for 9 expansions worth of gear options.

I’d also add the dragon riding weird approach. Ion mentionned that Dracthyr wil not get upgrades to dragon riding for some reason and will thus be forced to ride dragons from fairly early on in the expansion. Compounding the problem, they will be forced into their visage in order to ride dragons, because apparently dragon riding dragon is weirder than fox riding fox.
This is a significant break of the fantasy imo. For one, I don’t care nor do I want to see the visage form on my character, I want to be a dragon! Also, I actually think that the fantasy of a bigger dragon giving his dragon pal a ride is actually kinda neat! Finally, where the hell is the problem with dragon riding upgrades applying to my dracthyr? They can be limited to glide in content that you don’t want me to fly in, just like druid travel form is limited in instances!

I also agree that the human rig is just awful, their animations are so uncanny valley to me. I wish female visage was also using the belf base. Alextrasza doesn’t look human after all.

If I wasn’t already disinterested in dracthyr, their appearance would have definitely killed my enthusiasm.

I think that they look neat.

Especially their dance.

I totally agree. Was it really this hard to make every race for the Drac’thyr available? Could have saved a lot on production time while making sure the Dragon form is awesome.

Instead they went for the human/elf form which looks good instead the dragons themselves. Don’t look anything like a DnD/fantasy dragon at all. It’s so sad.

Nah its legit. We just don’t have any photos yet of the “slightly” thicker beefy dragons

Good to know I will be able to make my big buff Bronze dragon daddy after all.

Well I say slightly cuz thats how ion worded it. So it might be a small difference

They’ve only said “slightly thicker torso options”. Prepare to be disappointed.
