Layering system ideas

Layering is here, and it is gonna stay… You know Blizzard. Let’s brainstorm a little what can be done to counter abuses. There is a slim chance they will implement the idea if it is good.

  • Disconnecting and reconnecting: if you disconnect, there is a window of time in which you will reconnect to the same layer. Say 5 minutes.
  • Running from combat: you cannot change layers while in combat.
  • Corpse camping: you cannot change layers for 30 seconds after resurrecting.
  • Mat farming: you may change layers by group invitation up to 3 times every X minutes.

Easy to do with load balancing servers. They could do it for days if they wanted to. You’d have to reinstall the game or change your IP

The rest may interfere with doing instanced dungeons. Not sure though.

I don’ understand the point of complaining about something that will last 1 month out of who knows how much time classic will be played.

Best layer suggestion is to not have layers.

Hmm… I don’t see how it would interfere. What are you thinking?

If layering and instancing count as the same thing you only have so many dungeons you can do per hour. Would impact it if you’re grinding items or power-leveling friends.

I see. It would be easy separate it though…

IIRC instance servers are different from world servers, aren’t them? I am not very familiar with the modern architecture, so that difference may be non-existant nowadays.

Anyway, code can do that job.

Alternate solution:

  1. You choose the layer on character creation
  2. The layers are static, no swapping between them
  3. Towards the end of phase 1, they merge like we’ve been promised

This avoids the sharding/CRZ aspects of layering and allows for layer merges later.
