Thank you blizz for taking on this massive project to recreate the classic experience for all of us who played the original game. It is understandable that a 100% clone of the game, in this age, with this tech, is a challenge. One thing that I see being a game breaking change, and being easily abused is the Layering system.
As someone who does not have access to beta, it is clear to see the fundamental issues with a system like this. It is stated that the system won’t be in place forever. But could this system be exploited during that projected timeline? I think so. World of warcraft players will explore every crevice of the game to attempt to gain an advantage. Unfortunately, I feel the layering system is one of these crevices. I have seen on stream, and videos of people already abusing this mechanic. Using it for forced quest mob spawns, node spawns, as well as escaping a ganker in the world. I feel this takes away a major part of the authentic experience. As well as a very useful tool to take advantage of the in game economy, and can damage player relations.
I urge you to not implement this system AT ALL. It is not conducive to an authentic world of warcraft classic experience.

Oh great. Another one.
So you want dead servers. Good for you.

Not sure if I understand your argument. If anything it will create a more thriving world. Not one where you’re thrown into a layer with nobody but yourself? Not sure how that’s a good thing in a video game that is based upon social interactions. Would love to hear an honest opinion to your argument with an explanation, other than complaining.
You know what would be awesome? Is if everyone could stop complaining about layering. Literally leave it be. Stop. Just relax. When the game goes live just enjoy game and forget laying exists. It will be gone before you know it.

Layering doesn’t work the way you think it does. It’s not capable of throwing you onto a layer by yourself.
If it is, it’s just because the technology is new and they need to fix it. They’re not keeping it for long anyway. It’s there so they don’t have to waste money on additional servers at launch that will just end up dead when all the tourists leave.

I see it often said that layering will only be in the game for a short amount of time, but I see the initial leveling experience and the proverbial “first impression” as the most critical time of the overall game experience.
That is the period when layering would do the most damage and why it should be out of the game from the start.

So… you want dead servers too then? Cos that’s what you’re gonna get.

I think he means implemented like maybe a week after the inital start.
The only thing you have seen on streaming is outdated versions of layering.

You can argue the other way too. You think people will sit in 5+ hour queues to play a game. Or work for 8 hours to get out of the starter zones? I would say most would not. Some sure and those people will probably play either way.
I use these examples cause they are the extremes and I have seen people on other servers claim it took them that long to get out of the starter zone.

The options are:
Layering with lean servers. So you can pack the servers and when the pop falls each server has a healthy pop.
No layering with enough servers to handle initial launch. Meaning when the pop falls half of them are dead then you need merges or connected realms. No one wants that, at least no one should.
No layering with lean servers available. Meaning extreme queues and long wait times when you do get in. As well as people doing everything they can so they won’t get logged out, meaning some people won’t even be able to play.
Which of these seems the best?
Sure there may be other options but these three are the most realistic that blizzard would do. I know which I prefer.

There is this cool thing in the upper right of your screen near your portrait. It’s a search feature.
You can feel however you want… But PLEASE add it to one of the THOUSANDS of other threads on the topic!!
Thank you!!

Layering won’t magically prevent dead servers forever–what happens after layering? Realms are just as prone to people leaving as they were before.
That assumes that queues are the only other way, though. Really I feel that there are more options on the table than the ones listed. I’ve had a couple of ideas about raising or even eliminating the hard-cap on select or maybe all realms, and it’s interesting to think about how that potentially could spread players out over a lean realm list.

The game wasn’t designed with a higher-than-3000-player server cap in mind. Raising the cap is in even harder violation of #NoChanges than temporary layering to combat tourist season.

Upping caps and not changing spawns or implementing layering will be just as bad. Dynamic respawns screws with stuff just as much as layering. It also wasn’t in vanilla (at least not the way everyone wants it implemented). So why is one non vanilla change ok but the other isnt?

That is true, but I can see where there is some demand for mega-servers in some cases, especially with streamers.
Uh… no.
The demand is from pserver players.
Their demands aren’t valid.

The issue here is they are raising the cap in conjuction with layering. The only reason it’s ok though is cause of layering.

Each layer will be capped at 3000 players, too. So, yeah.

I hate saying this, cause well… I have a deep seeded hatred for paladins that stems from my early vanilla days. Pre SotC fix… but I… I like you Laeric.
