Oh…I also totally forgot about Logans adopted daughter, X-23 or Laura Kinney. Who’s pretty strong in her own right
X-Men is a great place for strong characters of every back ground.
Some see the popularity of wolverine and forget about the power of say, Gambit or Rogue.
Sooo many people have never even heard of Hope Summers (omega level mutant, also female)
But it won’t matter how many cool characters exist in established franchises, they must conform to the modern era and ‘the message’ to even be considered noteworthy by… some people.
That’s one of my issues. Those people will ignore the fact that we’ve had strong female characters in books/movies/comics dating back to at least the late 70s, but since it doesn’t fit the Far Lefts narrative or agenda, those characters don’t count.
Evidence is inconvenient to the lie they wanna tell people
And that’s ignoring that Galadriel in the lord of the rings novels is a absolute POWERHOUSE, but progressives ironically reduced her to a potential love interest of Saurons.
Talk about doing the opposite of what they preach
Power level is one thing; presentation is another.
Mary Marvel has the same powerset as her twin brother, Billy Batson, if you ignore the New 52 stuff (and you can bet I do because “what if all your favorite characters were EDGY” is not a take I need to engage with) and she is one of my personal favorites because my Grandma adored her… but power level is absolutely not the same as a character being written well. Or respectfully.
Not that we’ve ever seen that in the WoW franchise.
I can agree with this in some circumstances.
I always thought Malfurion was an awesome character. But just look at him. He is neither written well, or respectfully, and is getting essentially killed off next expansion.
Power levels are necessary though. Take X-Men again, because I’ve got it on my brain now.
You wouldn’t take an Epsilon level mutant (thats the weakest rank), no matter how well written they were, and pit them against the likes of Psylocke - omega level, bad girl mutant (yep, another female who is incredibly strong).
The weak mutant would get obliterated. Power is necessary to establish levels of strength even if it happens off screen
Because she has been confined to the comics. If her story was ever address in a movie/series more people would probably know her.
Sure, not every character, whether it’s in a book, movie or comic is well written or with respect, but I’d wager a vast majority are written decently enough to maintain a fan base of said character(s)
And lets be honest, everyone has a different taste on what they consider to be a well written or even a likeable character to begin with
I don’t think power level matters as much as the writing…
Or else a D lister like Kitty Pryde wouldn’t have rocketed up the ranks fast as she did.
Or my boy Nightcrawler, who’s… I’m just going to say “variable” depending on who’s writing him and what for. Ranking heroes is all well and good, but practically, it comes down to who’s writing them and the story they want to tell.
I agree, but if you’re talking x-men, then power levels are also important.
On the subject of writing, I agree it is fundamental to the success of any fictional work. And it is a dying art.
The modern sludge we are presented with these days is not real writing.
The black adam movie (which I was extremely hyped for, one of my fave DC characters), is so full of bad writing and expository dialogue that you need to shut your brain off completely and just suck up the action.
Rings of Power is an absolute disgrace with some of the very worst writing I have ever seen.
What Disney has done to star wars… The Last Jedi, Rise of Skywalker… atrocities in writing, of the highest order.
It’s such an important staple, and is becoming more and more criminally overlooked.
You can attribute that to what you will, but the checkbox mentality and making sure ‘the message’ is present at all times certainly, undoubtedly hinders writing potential.
To be fair…they more than made up for that with their Star Wars shows on Disney+ and this coming from someone who loves the sequel trilogy
Out of curiosity, what movies (et cetera) do you like?
Because in some cases, it’s just going to come down to taste.
Fer instance, and this might get me run off the forums, Star Wars movie writing has kind of always been stupid. Now, I didn’t watch any of the movies at a formative age, and we all know the best movies are the ones you watch in a safe environment with people you love when you’re about 10… even if those movies are terrible. So that might be why I lump new Wars in with Old Wars and Older Wars as “pretty fun, enjoyable”. I didn’t particularly care for Rise Of Skywalker, but I have least favorites in the other trilogies, too.
Is Andor any good? I couldn’t stomach Kenobi. My lord that was atrocious too. Mandolorian was decent though
Andor is amazing and so was Kenobi.
Fair enough, I’ll put it on my list
Hard to say really, I enjoy all kinds of stuff lol. Used to read Redwall as a kid, some solidly well written fantasy… but also watched dragonballz religiously on a saturday. So I enjoy my share of cheese too.
Love horror movies, action movies, fantasy etc etc I enjoy almost every genre. The original Hellraiser was such a cool premise, but also not without its cheese lol.
I just enjoy a well crafted story without the need for heavy handed exposition, because the writing has intricacies that shows an audience rather than tells the audience.
Definitely, in some cases. Different strokes for different folks. The world would be a boring place if we all liked the same things
Yep, Anduin really reigned in Tyrande. She absolutely did not walk out on his war table and start her own war in Darkshore, and she so enthusiastically signed the peace treaty at the end of the Fourth War. And Greymane so didn’t walk out and join her, so cowed was he by the Little Lion.
I suggest watching some of the new stuff with some kiddos, if I’m honest.
I enjoyed The Last Jedi a lot more than most people, and part of that was a pack of loud teenage girls behind my group who adored the movie. Listening to them gasp and whisper was genuinely pretty heartwarming. It’s always hard, especially with pop culture, to seperate how you feel about something from what it is.
Most of the things you’ve described skew younger, so part of that might be the circumstances you first encountered them in. And that’s not a bad thing. There’s a lot of things I love partially because the context around them. I read Black Beauty (want some heavy handed moralizing, DO YOU), fer instance. And adored it. And I grew up on old time radio broadcasts instead of TV, so I have opinions on Johnny Dollar and The Shadow.
I love Redwall, too. Pearls of Lutra was my favorite, but it’s been a while.
Tbh never thought I’d see anyone who knew what redwall was, thats cool. I have fond memories of Martin the Warrior, but its been a long, long time since I read those books
Well, we all get older, and it never quite hits the way it did after school when you’re just developing your personality and everything smacks of The Truth.
I just finished The Boneship trilogy, which was really solid. Great setting. So many good characters die horribly.
Also picked up a stack of Nebula Awards Showcase anthologies. Short stories are great. Like popcorn.
I mostly agree with your premise but would be remiss not to mention that even wows website says orcs don’t have a leader at current.
