I know you’re supposed to kill the healer in battlegrounds before focusing on dps, but I’m unsure how to do so as a caster. Basically, my dilemma is if I target healers, I’m forced forward so that I’m in range of all their dps, because good healers stay near the back of their pack. I’m not sure how to counter this. If I get in range of them, suddenly I’m focused and bursted down. If I stay near the back of my own group, I’m only within range of dps (which are getting spam healed).
So what do I do as a caster in that situation? Specifically as a mage, I’ve thought of polymorphing them, but polymorph’s short range puts me very close to the enemy pack, and they tend to trinket the first poly anyway. I want to “target the healer” but feel like I can’t for the reasons stated above.

Silence them if you can and hit them with everything you’ve got.
Also, remember you have Invis, so you can sneak to the back if they are hiding behind their team.

If you can’t get into a good position to cast spells on the enemy healers, you can focus on defending your own healers until it’s safer to move forward.

Abuse the slow build up of diminishing returns. Just because they trinket the first sheep, doesn’t mean you can’t sheep again. Assuming it’s only you casting sheep, you can sheep a person up to 3 maybe 4 times for a cumulative sheep time of around 8 seconds easily.
Don’t underestimate the effect of just annoying the hell out of someone, to throw off their game.

…or CC the healer, kill the dps, then kill the healer. I miss being able to banish the trees and angel wings,

Imagine playing a melee. This is a first world problem right here boys.
Run flame cannon and gpy.
World in Flames is dog
Yeah, playing a melee in battlegrounds is basically masochism. That’s why I play caster in bgs.
Sometimes getting out of position to try and kill them isn’t worth it. Just doing mad damage while landing counterspells on cool down will win ya the game.
That or sheep’s.
Ideally you want to kill dps and cc healers, but other dps will always break your cc. It’s almost impossible in randoms, which is why people encourage killing healers.
As mentioned above, play flamecannon, get max range, use noggenfrogger, hide in a bush and lob those gpyros.

Poly the healer nuke the silly DPS. Kill the healer after.
This, a thousand times this. Roots, sheep, ring–all if it can punish enemy DPS that are near your own healers and get their defensive cooldowns. Focus macros can help you spell lock and poly enemy healers when you see an opportunity.
Look for healers that are already in CC and poly them near the end of it is another fun thing to do.
