Keyboard Turning

I have been playing WOW for over 3 years. I have many toons and started at lvl 1. The manor in which the game was designed was to to use WASD to move. I thought this was great. I could also use the num lock pad for my right hand and not have to deal with the mouse. This actually has taken as far as I am now. I have been able to manage easily in the PVE realm and be part of mythic raiding guilds. The sticking point is now that the game has taken on such a heavy PVP based play, I have loved it! However I finally see the limitation to keyboard turning as I am struggling to get past the 1500s in arena and or compete at top levels elsewhere.

I know this is a played out subject however I have not been able to find one legitimate answer from Blizzard as to why they simply will not fix the issue and allow for adjustments to the camera keyboard turn speed to allow those who learned on this style to compete?

It is insanely hard to relearn to play. Not to mention expensive having to buy a 12 button mouse. I am struggling to see why if a game is built on a concept that it will not see it to the end. I enjoy the 2 hands on a keyboard feel so much better not to mention how many more buttons are available to you if you can use this.

You definitely don’t need a 12-button mouse. I use a 2-button mouse with my LEFT hand and use keybinds with my RIGHT hand, and I seem to poke along just fine. (the curse of severe left-handedness)

That said - yes, it is very difficult to relearn to play, but in this game, it’s ABSOLUTELY worth it to turn with your mouse. What I would do is to level another toon from scratch and begin trying to mouse turn. I definitely took a while to get the hang of it (10+ years ago now, but still, I remember the time it took).

I think regardless of the camera movement speed keyboard turning is going to be a limitation for you in pvp in some way. You also do not need a 12 button mouse, a couple side buttons is more than enough for most classes.

This isn’t any different to learning any new skill or breaking any habit in life generally. Ultimately, it’s going to come down to your desire to improve and willingness to persevere with discomfort until things start to feel more natural.

I don’t think having the mindset that your situation should adapt to your ability (I.e. improving keyboard turning), rather than you adapting to the situation is a good way to think about things. Unfortunately, things are unlikely to change, so I’d recommend picking up a mouse and making yourself use it say 30mins each night. It’s going to take a long while to feel completely comfortable, but that’s ok if you really do want to improve your game play.

Learning how to use the mouse takes about two weeks. It’s weird at first but u’ll get used to it

Appreciate feedback. I have Razer Naga Trinity Mouse and Orb Weaver game pad.

My point is why create something and get people started on it if ultimately its not viable?

IF ur gonna create a system to support Keyboard turning do it all the way… so we don’t need support groups to encourage people as we all have to make this lame painful adjustments. Not to mention people for one reason or another have handicaps and cant use a mouse that well but my be able to smash some buttons on the keypad.

The whole 12 button mouse comment i should have left off as it draws attention away from the real issue of Blizzard attempting to improve.

I think it started out as not really mattering back in 2004 but over time people realized that using the mouse was far better. I’m sure blizzard didn’t even notice the difference back in the beginning tbh or intend for this and they just never bothered to mess with it.

I’m sure they could do something for keyboard turners but unless they made it so you HAD to use your keyboard and couldn’t move with your mouse I don’t see keyboard turning ever being nearly as good as using the mouse

Yeah, mouse is much better not only for turning your character optimally, but also to adjust your camera without having to actually turn your character, which is rather important in arena.

The best way to learn is to just take the training wheels off and unbind a and d as turning. I personally use A and D keys to strafe, and have bound Q and E to abilities.

I’m actually insanely impressed at the lack of flaming in this thread.

LAWLZ MW MONK

now, on a serious note, you dont need a 12 button mouse at all, only one with two extra buttons on the side should do. think two extra buttons + shift + control+alt modifiers is 8 extra binds not even counting mouse wheel up down and click.

One thing id highley suggest donig while relearning your character movement is binding A and D to straift left and right respectively. Then getting used to using right mouse click to turn your character.

Also you can jump right into arena (its the end of the ssn rating dosent matter to much at this point, its getting reset in like a week), or just spam some casual bgs/dunegons/arenas while youget used to it. Will take about a week, will feel weird at first, but if you wanna push higher level content in pve and pvp you’ll take yourself a ton later.

One thing you could do, is that you could prolly move entirely with your mouse and just use your left hand for keybinds only (frees up an extra 4 binds). Idk though never tried that.

I use click to move, works a lot better

You definitely don’t need a 12 button mouse to play. I probably play one of the most keybind intensive specs while nearly optimizing everything to have around 90~ keybinds and I just use a standard FPS mouse. I can assure you you at least do not need a fancy mouse to compete, especially if you’re just going for basics.

All it takes is relearning some muscle memory but it is definitely not impossible to do

Not really a MW anymore, not really anything. Pretty much have checked out of WoW. Haven’t queued since the start of the season.

as a lefty that has always used the keyboard on the left hand I never had a problem with mouses, actually since most of my agility is in the left hand I can easily make binds like Ctrl+? and Shift+? to make up for the lack of mouse buttons. I only use mouse for Prem (mouse 3/4) and dispels/grip party 1 and 2 (scroll up =1, scroll down = 2)

??? just use your mouse???

I’ve used a 12 button mouse for maybe… 3 years? But you definitely don’t need it.

I used the OG version of this mouse for like 6 years and it only has 2 side buttons. Best and most durable mouse I ever used. They retired the model but I guess they brought it back by popular demand.

Thanks for all the positive feedback! I am the OG poster for this thread. Not sure why everytime i log in it picks one of my alts…
anyway I had a major breakthrough with the relearning using the mouse and unbinding my keyboard turns. Was a dark and painful 1 week but I can see the light now and will stop crying about it.

If it makes you feel any better, I was opened a ticket back in wrath trying to see if blizzard cs knew of a way to make wow playable on a controller so I could get some friends in wow and they responded with “wow is designed to play with a keyboard and mouse.”

I got to this post late, found it searching for a solution for a guild mate.

But I have to add that I learned to play FPS games from the start with a thumb-style trackball. That went fine until the DPI requirements for smooth pointing could be set into the 16k’s while my best trackball was only capable of 200. The smallest motion I could make with a low-but-comfortable sensitivity was the width of 2 heads at the range most people sniped at so I was forced to make a hardware change to a mouse. The feeling of “omg, I have to move my whole hand?!” That was awkward, but I now do much better. The reverse was funny though, watching someone else try to use my trackball and they try to slide the whole thing around LOL!

Later they finally made better trackballs, but I already switched, plus I had to routinely replace my trackball every 2 years as I would wear out the left click so I’ve not looked back. (Logitech G403 going strong after 3 years)

I share your pain. It’s real.

I love when I keep trying to turn but the enemy stays behind me and I can never hit them

Best decision in my pvp experience was to keybind, gained me 300 points off the bat, the rest is practice. “These are your first steps…”(obi-wan reference)
