Keeping Lock pet alive in arena

How do I keep my pet alive in arena? It’s like everyone is one shoting it. I’m playing Affliction LSP and there’s literally nothing that can be done.

It’s pretty hard honestly, if you’re playing a healer maybe have the healer play around keeping the pet alive.

It’ll eventually die but you have to have a good port and fel dom to bring it back up ASAP.

Hunters have the same problem tbh but they are far more reliant on pet that locks due to it having sac and a bunch of other things.

Keep your pet near you, or slightly away from you, but in range to cs or devour. You don’t need it’s minuscule dps. Also 2/2 life funnel in demo is better than imp healthstone imo. The point of the pet is to soak damage dealt to YOU and assist you in interrupts/dispels. It doesn’t need to be constantly attacking unless you’re trying to keep someone in combat when you cannot reach them. Hope this helps.

I’m 1800 right now. Have improved health funnel, a Warrior can solo kill it while I’m health funneling. I can pull out a Voidwalker and it’s still instantly killed. Even against other locks the game plan is always kill pet. It’s sad really. The most effective thing I’ve started to do was make my pet stay in starting zone.

The point of pet is 100% to use Soul Link. I instantly die to warrior without it. I never try to use it for damage.

It was SO much worse in TBC. You have 3 minute fel dom and port out of LOS to resummon. As far as keeping it alive, I think you might just be lacking awareness of its position. Put a mark on it and try not to tunnel so hard. You should have very comfortable pet attack, follow, and stay keybinds. I use scroll wheel up/down/click left on wheel and am constantly combining that with my character actions based on the situation. You can stay your pet in a position that is out of melee range but able to lock a healer who is trying to get in range of their partner. Watch chanimal on twitch and other pro locks and just pay attention to their pet control. It’s the hardest thing to pick up about lock pvp imo and one of the most important.

And pulling out a void is rarely gonna save you, work on your positioning to avoid putting yourself in situations where melees can go ape mode on you.

I do all this. It’s really only an issue against at 2100+ MMR Thundercleaves. Especially on Dalaran arena. Other maps I can punish Warriors position. I’m also playing Affliction which I haven’t seen from any other Locks currently. I was looking from suggestions for high rated Locks. I’m not sure how to get that, I’m going to be pushing glad this season but keeping pet alive against high rated Thundercleaves is rough.

While they are killing your pet, LoS behind a pillar and start summoning a new one. In 2s, This is a bit tricky against double dps, but take advantage of portal. I generally port and instantly start summoning a new pet. If they’re focusing your pet, you can let the dots tick while they beat on your pet.

In 3s… It definitely is very tough in 3s to keep it alive, but keeping pet on stay just in LoS behind a pillar, a good enough distance away from them, will always give you time to resummon a new one. Your teammates can peel for you. Because if they’re wasting their time killing your pet when you can instant summon another, or LoS with dots ticking while hard summoning, they’re gonna lose eventually.

This is because there isn’t enough haste to make Affi good, near end game Wrath they are OP and can 1v1 any class if they know how to play it well.

I suggest Destro for now, they can easily get away with insta clapping people if played properly and the pet is important to survival but not as important as Affi is right now.

Look them up on ironforge.pro and go whisper them on an alt. Sounds dumb but it works. I’ve gotten tons of advice from top players by just cold messaging them.

I mean, do you think there’s a secret code they’ll tell you to keep it alive? It’s positioning, and strategy. making it a pain in the bologna to kill your pet. You should always be making it annoying as possible for them to kill it. The second you see them switch, go begin a hard cast summon. 3min fel dom is fantastic.

I wasn’t glad, but I did get 2k in wrath, and 2k in cata and mop on my lock, warrior, and Paladin. I used to do sweaty arenas in my younger years. I’m just telling you, it’s about positioning and out smarting them. It sucks, but keeping your pet alive is part of the class. Without it, we’re a mage with no blink, counter spell or ice block.

I’m wondering if there’s something I’m not understanding. I don’t play 2s because they’re boring. I’m guessing like another poster said is the problem is that I’m Affliction and can’t put out the pressure as Affliction while they’re killing my pet.

Yes season 5 sucks for affliction due to not having enough haste on gear realistically. I have very little experience with destro though. I’ve never been a fan myself. I assume you have 3/3 eradication? It’s so mandatory it’s unreal in the early seasons. In wrathful you could get away with 2/3 if you want. But until then, it’s slow dots.

If you know all that then you probably shouldn’t be asking on the wow classic forums. It’s not exactly a hub for high rated pvpers. Watch Chan and Scryna on twitch and learn from them.

Also, yeah as others have said Affli is just not doing the necessary damage right now to compensate for our squishiness. I play it as RLS and it’s barely ok. I know if I played ele destro hpal I’d probably be 200 rating higher.

It sucks but that was always the strat if the warlock is the main focus target.

Yeah, my gear is really good. Full BiS PvE gear with full Deadly offsets, Deadly offhand, Deadly wand, Titanforge Helm/Boots, and Hateful main set. Besides Deadly mainsets there’s no other upgrades. I play Destro well, I’ve been 2500 with it but I like Affliction better.
