I haven’t read anything Tolkien in 5 years so I had to google.
Appearantly it was Elros Tar-Minyatur.

they are orcs. hehe. uruk is a derivation of orc. also rukhs, rakhas, etc. tolkien was into etymology.
Uruk-hai were half man, half orc. That’s what seperated them from normal orc, their increased intelligence.

If this is (or was) a real word, then no. Hai is entirely made up.
It could’ve been in one of Tolkien’s conlangs, I never bothered with those.

oh interesting. it says he took the orc concept from a book called the princess and the goblin, and also beowulf in which orc is old english for demon or hell-devil.
Beowolf is a fun song, if you’re into that sort of thing.
It is, I translated some of Beowulf and I turned green when I saw orc pop up. I think it was around line 500.
