June 4th - PvP Q&A

Is dampening really that bad? Where would we be without it in the current meta? Being that pvp is basically CD trading, and the pros are playing at the top, would anyone ever lose without dampening? With the current cooldown meta, if both pro teams play perfect, why should someone die? If they both play perfect and one team dies, that just means the other team had a better composition than the team they faced right? Aka thats the opposite of what balance tried to achieve. If everybody plays perfect, and no one dies, then that’s pretty balanced if you ask me.

The only other thing you could ask for OTHER than dampening, is the old rock paper scissor style of arena. So you either get to play unhealable damage dampening meta, or play a never ending meta, or finally, play a meta where classes have huge identity, but you random lose to class mechanics not because of skill(dampening kinda does this, some classes fair way better in dampening then others)

Perhaps what you guys really want, is no dampening, and for pros to play hour long matches until someone makes a mistake because they are tired? (would be kinda cool I guess, something tells me WoW was like this at one point when I wasn’t playing and people didn’t enjoy it)

We didn’t need dampening in wotlk because it wasn’t all about CD trade. Yea you use abilities to force things like ice block, but its nothing like it is today. Everything is about CDs nowadays, while back before dampening, some classes had little to no cooldowns. Rogue is one that comes to mind, the only CD’s they had were defensive CDs, other than cold blood and maybe damage trinket but that was about it.

While dampening does suck for many reasons, its probably the only bandaid worth keeping in the current version of the game unless they pulled some serious strings to seriously change the meta away from cooldowns.

Maybe dampening should just be removed from AWC but not from retail. Sure no ones gonna enjoy watching them go into hours matches, but atleast it would be a wild experience for the winning team.

What I’d personally love to see is more abilitys like greater fade, or vanish, that have a kill/cc potential, but leaves you vulnerable. Commit your CD and go for the win or lose if they counter you type of play.

  1. Why are templates no longer a thing anymore. They solved a lot of the gearing and balance issues with class power.

  2. The answer isn’t to ‘Get good’ like Ian said. The gear disparity is insane. With main stat been much larger in value than ever before, ilvl is a ridiculous advantage in pvp.

  3. What is stopping solo queue?

  4. How do some classes go unchecked for an entire season? and why does it take so long for an obvious overpowered ability or class to get nerfed.

  5. When can we get new Battleground?

  6. Can we do quests while waiting in RBG groups please. I’m sick of doing laps of Oribus.

You’re so close to finding the issues

Dampening existing in general is fine, once you hit it games should be getting finalized basically

When games however don’t even begin to start and nothing matters until deep dampening is when there’s an obvious issue

It should be very possible to end games before dampening hits

Yea that makes better sense. Now that you mention it, I’ve seen a few strats involving “wait till damp” and that’s just lame and does scream an issue.

2 more days and we get some answers on the direction Blizz is going take

I played a lot of MLX, WLX, shadow play etc in BFA s4 into all kinds of comps including mirrors, and the longest 3s game I have ever played since I started doing arena in legion was this season, MLD (me) vs rdruid god comp. I actually don’t understand how it would be possible to lose as that comp before 50% damp with the current tuning on those 3 specs (being fire, shadow, and rdru)

I hope he just tells them everything they’ve done for the past years has completely sucked and it’s time they fired the joke of an employee making these idiotic moves and put someone that actually knows what they are doing in charge, for the sake of us all

“Since the current PvP gearing system creates a large barrier to entry for alts, new, and returning players and has led to rampant boosting as well as created a very frustrating PvP experience for lesser geared players do you think it would be a good idea to return to the WoD gearing model where everyone could compete on an equal footing and skill rather than gear would be the major determining factor in who wins and loses in all PvP encounters from random bg’s to 3400 3’s and everything between?”

If you don’t actually confront them with the reality of the situation and frame the question in a way which limits their ability to sidestep and dismiss the issues then you will get nothing productive out of it. Of course this may not be the case with Holinka as I always saw him as more of a straight shooter when it came to his interviews.

Yes. Dampening is the root of all problems with arena.

When did shatterplay get renamed god comp? Is it because mages don’t use shatter anymore?

in mop when rdruid got symbiosis ice block
nothing was killable through the 70 defensives and you had access to literally every dr and none of it drd with eachother

Eh idk, vanilla, bc, and wotlk was great time for what it was, Cata rubbed me the wrong way cus “muh original world that was dead anyway” then monks came out and there was no quarterstaff, shurikens, not even a bow boy monk, and there were pandas… pandas man… and everything was of oriental influence which just gave me bad flashbacks of all the crappy free mmos I found off of google. Oh and the fact you gotta constantly drink tea as a monk too… makes my stomach hurt thinking about it. Still won’t level a monk to this day and “lightweight fighter” such as rogue, has always been my thing. Atleast crimson vial sort of makes sense in the fact the rogue found a rare herb over the years that he utilizes like poisons. Just a small potent molecule vial. Running around and sipping tea before I have to punch you was just too meme-ish and the movie kung fu panda made it even seem more of a joke of an xpac.

That isn’t true at all! You can disable Legendaries and Covs all you want the base game is super broken due to homogenization of the classes. It was this way in Legion too. There aren’t class roles anymore. There aren’t classes that have hardly any mobility or lack healing. Everyone can Dps/Heal/Tank and it feels really bad!!

Rogues got healing back in like 4.0 and they should have ZERO healing. Dps shouldn’t have healing they should use bandages, eat food or have a Healer. They shouldn’t have multiple mobility and casters need to be squishy because they wear cloth. So that way when a melee finally gets on a clothie they explode because they should be squishy. There should be resource management again. If you spam, cyclone, purge etc you should run out of mana.

I don’t think you know what is meant by class design or class roles. It means each spec has big weaknesses and requires other specs to fill in that gap.

I don’t know how you can say it’s leggos or covs since it’s been this way for several expansions.

That is why I asked these question.

Holinka came back as a class designer and I’m hoping for class design questions. Nothing impacts PvP more. The overly simplified classes have been the #1 source of my burnout with the game since WoD. You can’t do cool stuff anymore.

in b4 massive disappointment

I seriously doubt that. You MIGHT get the argument high end players like that but I promise you the average player has zero desire to spend more than 5 minutes in a single arena.

they don’t
