I dont have dragonflight but my cousin does and im on shattered hand and hes on blackrock. im trying to join his guild but it wont let me. is this because of our servers or because i dont have dragonflight and he does?
Yes.
Not due to expansion level, but due to the realms.
Some realms are grouped together within 2-4 realms.
In the Americas region, the following are connected:
Coilfang, Dalvengyr, Dark Iron, Demon Soul, Shattered Hand
Azjol-Nerub, Blackrock, Khaz Modan, Muradin, Nordrassil

It’s because your on different servers, you need need to be on the same server unless those servers were connected.

It is because of servers, but note that this is changing in TWW pre-patch, which is supposed to be coming this summer.
