Join a guild, seriously

lol well-said. I always feel like the odd one out, and it seems like every guild consists primarily of irl friends

The last three guilds I joined were dead within months. They seemed promising at first, but then the leaders would just PUG their way to gear and achievements and then leave without doing a thing to schedule raids or support their own guild.

Seems like guilds are dead unless you know the leaders IRL, or unless you submit an application to a more hardcore one. But then who wants to commit to raiding 8 hours per week as part of your application?

Yeah, in my experience, it’s either a mass invite guild. Which dies immediately after the honeymoon of launches end. Then there’s the other guilds, which are all inner circle social cliques where they have to include others in order to progress their gear. You’re just there for that purpose, and that’s exactly what it feels like.

To be fair, it’s always gonna seem like established cliques are there when you’re the new person in an active guild. Integrating and getting to know people takes time.

Yeah, fair enough.

Those aren’t leaders. A real leader wouldn’t be so single minded like that. I tried to start my own guild but the friends I do have don’t want to play and it’s like pulling teeth to convince them to. So know my guild is just another bank.

I feel you. I’ve only managed to convince one friend to play this game since Cata. And as luck would have it, he’s not interested in the content I’m interested in.

but do you have any idea how much better the game is with a guild?

I “pulled myself up by my bootstraps” in life. Don’t know why that phrase triggers so many people who don’t have the motivation and willpower to do better for themselves.

It takes a lot of time and work sifting through 1000s of guilds to find a guild that fits a player. There is also no absolute certainty that the first guild that you join will do any content with you.

Might take a few tries and some people do not want to go through that.

it’s the same when buying a car, a house, finding a job, a wife, and so on. it’s part of life to find 'good enough" and go with it.

That sounds correct. Unfortunately my experience the past three guilds I’ve been in is that this gets me promoted to officer rank, the leader still PUGs their way to gear and achievements and then leaves, and then I’m left with a dead guild I don’t have the permission to fully manage.

Ain’t that the truth. I ran one on Icecrown back in WoTLK. It almost felt like a full time job.

I actually miss being part of one. I just cannot commit due to work and life schedule. I barely have enough time just to do all the things I want to in game, let alone contribute time and help to a guild.

I really miss the atmosphere of a semi-hardcore / casual progression guild, I think some might consider that Heroic raiding by today’s standards. The kind that raided for a few hours 2 to 3 nights per week. The kind that also had players of all skill levels and had entertaining chatter in vent/teamspeak most of the time.

Perhaps when my children are grown and I can reduce my hours at work, I’ll seek out one of these guilds again.

A couple of things I don’t miss are cliques and officers becoming power hungry.

My guild kicked me out for leaving an optional raid

That’s rough buddy.

I’ve had both my worst experiences in WoW and my absolute best/fondest in WoW because of guilds. It really is a drastic difference in your game outlook when in a guild.
