Yep…but WOD was the first time they REALLY dropped the ball, and people were willing to give them a second chance with how good Legion was.
BFA had many good points, but it had TERRIBLE systems that were not received well that drove people away. And then Shadowlands was the 1-2 knockout punch. And then we had all of the other stuff Blizzard did since 2018 that kept digging their hole deeper.
It’s going to take a lot more than one good expansion for WOW to recover at this point. They need to think of themselves as the underdog (because they are, FFXIV is way ahead), and not just “expect” players.
FFXIV proved that, given time and work, a failing MMO can not only recover but dominate (as it has for the past few years). Don’t get me wrong, I like FFXIV, its storytelling is leagues better than WOW, and it has a much larger variety of stuff to do. But its alt system is very grindy (you’re expected to do other jobs on your main character - but because you can’t do the quests again all you can do is grind). And the combat system is just nowhere near as polished as WOW (it’s gotten better, but I much prefer WOW’s combat).
For dungeons…they’re about the same, 6 of 1, half dozen of the other. FFXIV has the same “gogogogogo” problem WOW does, arguably worse there. Healing is MUCH better in WOW due to being able to use addons like Vuhdo.
For raids, WOW wins hands down, I just don’t find FFXIV raids very fun. Of course, endgame is not focused on raiding the way WOW is, and with such a large variety of stuff to do, it’s not as much of a hindrance as you might think.
That said, I do not enjoy FFXIV’s endgame. I play it like a single player game. Finish the current story, do all the dungeons/raids once to see the story, then take a break until there’s something new.
