Let it first be clear that my arguments shall be made towards the lore aspect, as game balance would literally be a non-issue anyways.
Throughout the countless storylines of Azeroth and Co., we are taught a variety of lessons. While each story is unique and interesting in it’s own right, many of those lessons turn into common themes, touch on by multiple sources if you play through all of the questlines you can. One of the less common, though much more noteworthy, occurrences that seems to pop up repeated, it one where a member of a race breaks ranks, and for all intents and purposes is something which by standard nature they would otherwise not be.
We most often see this play out via change of faction, but sometime, much more interesting, these character can take up the arms of a class of hero which normall they couldn’t wouldn’t be. Perhaps one of the more interesting debates is about Leonid Barthalomew, and whether or not he is truly a Paladin still. Much of Warcraft’s lore was based off of the same material we use for DnD, and in this universe thing such as undead paladins can manifest as beings who, by their connection to the light, FEEL their undeath and illness, and for whom each use of their power, while painful, is a potent test of faith. And given that there’s much precedent for the living-challenged channel light based abilities despite their inherent corrupt nature, the only two arguments would be that and undead paladin would feel pain, and that they would, if truly a paladin, not want to remain a member of the faction.
But both of these points have already been seemingly addressed. As previously stated, we can literally channel light based abilities, so we know the connection is still there. And we have members of the horde who are paladins happily, so why could they not simply, relocate?
This is but one argument towards what would probably be the hardest push, as it would have the greatest perceived conflict with lore. Yet the lore provides us with the very ground by which these things could happen. And Through World of Warcraft’s numerous expansions, is not one the most poignant lessons with which we are mercilessly bludgeoned over the head with repeatedly cough cough Jayna is that you can be whoever you want, despite what anyone says, for the love of your home and the love of your faction are the only things that matter?
I’d say it certainly is. Thus, it’s time we unlock all classes for all races, and let people have some darn fun because the only people who won’t enjoy it are people who are looking for reason to be bothered anyways. Game balance is a non issue, and the lore provides as always. The only thing holding us back is us, and Bliz.
