It's a sad month for progressive shows

No more Star Trek Discovery after Season 5,

Had to bring back the legend of David Tennant to “save” Dr Who from becoming ‘too political’, TV has been getting more progressive, but for some reason, it’s just failing. Why?

Personally, I am sad that Star Trek Discovery is coming to an end, as we’ve seen movies and sci-fi set all throughout the third millennium but imagining what life could be like 1000 years from now I think is pretty cool, I think it’s sad that Trek fans are saying ‘no, forget STD, it’s not canon!’

Also think Dr Who under Jodie Whittaker wasn’t that bad, I liked the O Master, and the final episode that she was on was pretty good.

Maybe these kind of shows would have been more acceptable 20 years from now culturally, and just had too much progressive politics at once in their stories??

Or is there another reason for their complete failure?

Those shows went Woke and end up losing viewers because of that. Go Woke, go broke.

I didn’t watch em due to time and I’m not interested in Dr. Who or Star Trek.

I like to watch older stuff sometimes if it is on at mom and dads but i dont go out of my way to watch it. Aren’t those on streaming services too? I have paramount plus and that’s it. I’m not getting anything else. Paramount has beavis and butthead / some southpark and I’m happy with that.

That’s bait.

I stopped watching Dr. Who After what they did with the Doctor’s origin.

Those are good show.

Maybe, but those shows are failing because of the same issue. Instead of addressing the problem Hollywood keeps doubling down and keep adding woke garbage to their shows. Little Mermaid trailer is going to drop during the Oscar. Problem here that no one watches the Oscar anymore and that Trailer will get a massive down vote on youtube

Most people don’t want politics in their shows. For one thing, when you put that into your movie or show, you are telling a large chunk of viewers that this show isn’t for you.

And for another, people watch fiction and fantasy to escape reality. Putting your political view into a show isn’t allowing people to escape.

If people want to watch someone talk about a certain political view, they’ll turn on one of the three opinion news networks.

I actually agree with this, as I’ve been watching re-runs of what people call the golden era of Star Trek being TNG, Voyager etc…

But I actually think the Golden Age of Star Trek is now, as the reality is, we’ve got half the seasons of Star Trek now that we had in the 30 years between the 60s and when Enterprise stopped in 2005.

What I like about the modern series, is that most of the ships inside no longer are full of those bright colors and comforts you saw in the older shows, they are darker, and more realistic, there’s more swearing which they wouldn’t dare do on screen back in the 90s,

I am sad to see Discovery go, but I’ll be honest, I found the later seasons slightly more interesting, when Saru became Captain, as we actually haven’t seen an alien become captain too often, I also liked the plot involving the Empress, and was good to see the Guardian of Forever again, and there were great moments. The short point is, STD wasn’t complete trash, I think it just suffered from the Enterprise curse, that I think Star Trek fans weren’t actually after prequels, but STD fixed that with the later seasons as by going to the far future, they could escape from established lore, and do whatever they wanted,

I also like how in the current season of Picard, the ship they are on is just darker, the bridge of the Titan isn’t brightly lit like Voyager and the Enterprise D, it makes space feel like a real scary and dangerous place, and it’s good to see Seven of Nine again too,

Anyway that’s all I got for now, peace out

people will find “politics” wherever they want so unfortunately that means all shows

Well I’m afraid to tell you that every show with a coherent story likely has some political theme or undertone.

I dunno. Discovery is ok but the crew are largely a bunch of whiny crybabies. That doesn’t fit the Trek mode.

My problem with Dr Who isn’t politics. The showrunner and writers just didn’t ‘get’ the Doctor. Jodie was not the whacky, lovable hero fans loved. The companions really didn’t fit the mold of Rose, Amy or Clara. There were too many of them and none became that special char that audiences could embrace.

There have been a number of successful ‘Progressive’ shows over the years. All in the Family and Mash were huge hits. Maude did pretty well. The West Wing was a masterpiece that still has a big streaming following.

We’ve become so divided that folks can find a way to scream “politics!” about any show. Law and Order was a smash hit but Bill O’Reilly accused the show of being far left.

I think a truly good show can succeed even if people on the fringes hate it. BUT, if a show is going to be overtly political, it has to be done with class and skill. The sledgehammer approach will turn too many viewers off.

I don’t consider myself a fan but I’ve seen many of the older series. The shows absolutely stress a global rather than national atmosphere with progressive ideals. Ideals today we find normal but back in the 60’s,70’s and 80’s would be controversial. I also like how Tucker fans use the term woke without knowing its definition. It just simply means don’t be a azz and just treat people fairly without making stupid comments about them.

I disagree. My favorite movies, The Thing (1982), Predator and Alien don’t have a political theme. It’s pure entertainment.

Alien definitely has political themes.

Like what?

Powerful female main character.

How is that political?

Btw, I just read several websites on Alien facts and not one says Weaver was hired because of “not enough women in sci-fi” or some other political nonsense. The script was written for a woman lead. That’s not political.

The dangers of corporate greed for one. It has been a very long time since I’ve watched the movies but I believe the first one quite literally has a secret robot on board with a mission to bring the alien back despite the reality the crew will likely be dead.

There’s a difference between today’s ‘woke’ shows and political themes in media circa 2010s. Politics have been in media since the dawn of time, because people have always had their personal opinions about it. Nowadays, those themes are poorly written, poorly executed, and oftentimes, it’s cringe beyond belief.

Today’s social landscape spawned people like Jennifer Lawrence who think they were the first female lead in film (she said that no joke), when Sci-Fi media has always been ahead of the curve with that stuff. Stargate, for example.

I don’t care who the MC is, or what they look like, I just want good shows and movies to watch. For every 20 absolute dogwater shows/movies that come out these days, there is 1 or 2 that is amazing. Like, Stranger Things for example.

TL;DR: most media today is cringe, but also, saying go woke go broke is equally cringe. Don’t come for me.
