Yes.
The EULA has had a Code of Conduct since day one. And people were punished for it back then, as well.
Negative words are negative.

I would disagree with this, even though I am usually respectful to people.
Much less, hence the āBarrens Chatā history.
Telling people what to say is a slippery slop to tyranny.
The TOS/EULA has not changed to speak of with regard to chat rules in WoW. It is easier now to report people with right click instead of having to make a ticket, but the rules are the same.
You have it right. You can joke around and trash talk with your friends all you want. The folks in the public chat channels and group finders are strangers though. They are all ages and backgrounds. You know, the sorts of folks you run into every day and politely say āGood morningā or āhave a nice dayā.
Blizzard does not monitor chat looking for violations. They depend on people reporting things - which means strangers in public chats and groups.
If folks just keep in mind that there is a time and a place for things - some things are best saved for your friends group. Just like you said.
To do that, keep it to your own privately formed groups in game, or to outside channels like Discord. Use the āpoliteā vocabulary for the strangers in the public channels.
You can say what you want, but you are not immune from the consequences of that speech. It may be that others just donāt want you around anymore if you say certain things, or donāt want you in their house/shop/platform. Private property rights are a thing that allows those owners to set rules, and to enforce them. So you can say what you want, but donāt be shocked if people react to it and show you the door (assuming it is mean/rude).
Also, just because it is sort of funny, I am going to tell you what to say. /hands you a āslopeā instead of āslopā.
You were born with the app, itās called āself controlā
Youāre welcome.
I completely agree that a business can always set the rules it wishes to run by. But they should also always ask them selves if they are being to strict. Itās a balancing act. Too loose and people will stop playing, to strict the same. But people can generally tolerate more on the loose side. Itās their business, but businesses have shot themselves in the foot before.
Of course, it does come down to money, to a large degree. It also comes down to what sort of community Blizzard wants to have.
They donāt go LOOKING for people trash taking in their guild with their friends or in their premade friend dungeon group. There is no AI running scanning all that we say. That WOULD drive players away.
What they do want, is a public image that the game is civil and polite for the general public of all ages and backgrounds.
There is also the huge anvil over the head of every company - lawsuits. Nobody wants that. After all activist and legal crusades condemning D&D, music, movies, TV, etc as āsatanicā and ādestroying our children and societyā, the entertainment industry agreed to self regulate. To set limits on the kinds of images shown, language used, topics discussed, etc. To rate the content and warn parents. They also canāt rate player interactions because they are in real time, so they set rules that are safe. Safe enough nobody can accuse them of intentionally allowing someone to be mistreated.
Yeah, so all those parental warnings and such and lawsuit happy people is why we keep our colorful chat to our friends groups or Discord.
I was only reported once like, 10 years ago for raging in a BG chat. Iāve never had any issues with chat before or after that day. How do you find yourself on the wrong end of reports simply for ātelling people what to doā ?
All employers are tyrants. Welcome to the struggle comrade.
So just donāt type? I mean if you want to see chat, but not participateā¦ I mean I guess I could be being Norwegian and not understanding your conundrum completelyā¦
I opened my own business to get around all that. lol. But, TY.
So you believe they are already erring on the side of free speech. I would probably agree for most things. I have never been banned or anything close to it. But Itās still always something worth looking into. Am I trading freedom for safety, those who do lose both eventually.
Thatās your perogative, but socializing in a game should not be treated differently than socializing IRL.
Incorrect comparison. Barrens chat was a bunch of jokes not aimed at people. Trash talking others in a dungeon does not equate.
No one is telling you that you canāt say something. Theyāre telling you that you face consequences for said words if they go against a private corporationās rules.
This aināt the government, sir and/or madam.
There is nothing overly strict about Blizzardās rules. Donāt call people āidiots,ā or ābad at the gameā or insult them with swear words in random pugs.
In over 18 years of playing this game, I have never once been actioned in this game. Or any online game Iāve ever played, for that matter.
Just donāt type in chat. Not sure why you need an addon.
If you know what you say is going to lead to people reporting you, become that silent observer.
IDK, people trashed on each other pretty badly and lewdly in Barrens chat. But I understand if can feel more personal in a smaller group of people, and you are actually interacting with them. Not just talking trash in a whole general area chat.
That is a critically important topic - but it really does not apply to being nice to people in video games I donāt think. That is a discussion about Government controls and monitoring vs freedoms of the people.
This waves hands is not the place to get into that discussion though.
The truth is that people who complain about ācancel cultureā are the worst offenders who wish to cancel everybody that has a different opinion from theirs.
I suppose, but solid ideals for regulation are solid ideals for regulation. Still I do get that being scolded/banned in a video game is not even close to imprisoned for wrong think.
I didnāt play vanilla. But certainly during classic I saw no insult-slinging in Barrens chat. Theyāre a bunch of low levels in that zone. The only ālewdnessā I saw was a few Chuck Norris jokes.
āChuck Norris is so virile he knocked up Mankrikās wife.ā
Back in the day the player level for the Barrens was 12 - 40. because RFK was a mid 30ās level dungeon. upper Barrens was lower level, lower Barrens was higher level. So people were there for a very long time, but not only there. You used to have to go to lots of areas in the world to level up, with tons of back and forth. Like questing in the Barrens youād get a quest to deliver a turtle shell to Silver Pine.
you dont understand how much ick-riding goes on public chat.
Got banned for telling a mage in a bg his low level water was useless after he demanded everyone else in the bg report me afk for not taking his trade. Not a mute. A full ban. I didnt insult him. I didnt call him stupid. I didnt say he was useless. I said his water/food was useless because it would take 3-4 of them to refill my health, and I had better food.
Banned.
Its all automated, and as soon as one crayon eater starts trying to cook up a pearl, you are done.
