The guy is the center of the whole expansion as well as the final boss… Would have been rather awkward to kill him off in the first chapter.
The purpose of the villain is to drive the story. The hero just reacts.

with Metzen back maybe we don’t have to worry about fighting Sylvanas’s ghoul that split from a ghost after Arthas professed his love to her in some alt time that the bronze dragons created
