Is Retail Dead?

Retail is not dead and we shouldn’t want it to be. Let’s hope classic is here to stay and going forward, retail makes some massive improvements and gets us all rock hard again!!

Never thought classic would kill retail, people just taking a break at most from it for a few weeks to a few months, the majority of the participation reward players will be back no retail in no time.
I’m also sure that the majority of the hardcore raiders don’t plan on no lifing classic either, obviously there’s some exceptions that think getting world first in classic matters. Couldn’t care less about them getting it in retail either.

Just have a good time with it.

Nah, the tourists will go back to ghosting wow for another 5 years, like what they did before classic servers. Active players aren’t tourists to the franchise they’ve been spending time on almost daily

I wouldn’t be surprised if retail takes a massive loss of players now that Classic is out. Retail went downhill fast once Ativision stepped in I feel. With the in-game shop and all these extras to buy and funnel money other then the monthly subscription. I know I’ll be rarely on retail anymore, and I already was pretty rarely on it.

EDIT:

Not to mention just the way the game play changed in Retail, the raiding and pve, the pvp, the story line, every aspect just felt super water downed. At most is was just a time sink when I had a couple hours to kill or was bored. Nothing really feels like an accomplishment in Retail anymore.

Half the subs are in classic now because they ran out of things to do in retail. It has gotten so old. You can level a character in a day and get geared in less than two weeks. Then repeat. So many resubbed just to play Classic. People were getting bored. I havent played in weeks until classic was launched because retail and this expansion is so boring. I dont plan on returning to retail until the next expansion launches

It’s not that there’s nothing to do in retail, it’s just that you’d have to lose your spot in que and never be able to play since the line is almost always hours long

I dont think so. Was a huge gamble, and likely very costly. I think they felt comfortable doing it because they are still making good money from BFA.

You clearly don’t run a business. You don’t put money into something without having money to fund it. Classic exists because of two things working in harmony… a niche to fill and working capital to fund it.

I think its funny that this is even a question. In order to play classic which is free you have to be subbed to retail. Without retail, Classic does not exist. Retail will never be dead IMO

Anecdotally, I tried to get an M+ group together to run my key. I’m a 1350ish Resto Druid. Couldn’t do it. Looked to join someone else’s group, there were 4 groups in the finder. 2 weeks ago, I averaged about 20 minutes to form a group and there were 20-25 groups in the finder.

Could be nostalgia, could be holiday, could be a lot of things, but it definitely feels more empty.

without vanilla/classic, retail would not exist

Assume that everyone who plays wow will at least switch to classic for 2 to 4 weeks exclusively. Some players will do it until maybe level 40 and then quit because the grind to max level was super tedious and punishing if you are just trying to get to end game. If you enjoy tedious grinds, wow classic is tailor made just for you. By 3 months, classic will be filled with the people with the time and focus to grind to 60 and any casuals will probably return back to retail to take the sting away from realizing that the game was made for cellar dwelling unemployed people whose absolute pinnacle of existence was strutting around org with epic gear. Not a slight, seriously… these are the folks who have the fondest memories of Vanilla wow… they peaked in 2004-2006… like the highschool jocks who ruled highschool and then 40 years later are living in a trailer on the outskirts of town collecting aluminum cans to survive.

I like both games for different reasons. Classic is fun for leveling. retail is fun for the game play and raiding/ mythic+.

One thing I really don’t like about about classic is the combat. A lot of classes just spam one ability the whole time. It’s a fun experience but the combat is making classic a little less fun the more I play it.

I hope not.

As much as I’m personally not a fan of current Retail WoW, a LOT of people are still enjoying it. For their sakes, I would hate for the success of Classic WoW to have a negative effect on Retail WoW.

Won’t die. But depending on the long term success of Classic…there could be major shifts in how “Retail” grows.

What is dead may never die.

I’ve logged on a couple times and have noticed a small drop in population. It’s also probably due to the fact that we’re a couple months into this patch now and because Modern WoW is designed to throw everything at you if you put in a decent amount of time, a lot of people are probably mostly done until the next tier.

My Paladin is 442 ilvl and I don’t Mythic raid, it’s a joke.

Bump. Good discussion so far guys. Anyone know how Classic WoW is going over in China? If we’re being honest that’s probably the market they’re going to cater to. What do you guys think?

Huh? Not at all. Not sure how you figured that. It isn’t just nostalgia that will suddenly die off and bore people. My friends and i have been playing Vanilla for years now. I’m incredibly happy that Blizzard is finally offering it officially.

Face it. Some people just don’t like the easy, fast-paced, purple gear raining retail version. Some people like that Classic makes something as simple as collecting boars’ teeth or finding the next town very rewarding. Things are meaningful again.

It will never look dead, it has cross realm to make it seem like its popular when its not.
