Not really. When you play any character in a MMO, you are not playing yourself. You’re playing a character you created, with his or her own backstory.
I’m a white male, but I play a wide variety of characters that are either male or female, spanning across many races and in both factions. I use the Stan Lee analogy when it comes to character creation: Stan Lee is not his creations, but they ARE his creations.
People who think it’s weird are weird. It’s okay not to listen to them.

It is perfectly normal for guys to play female characters in video games. However, when they pretend they are females and try and trick other players into thinking they are females, that is weird.

Different characters are going to speak to you in different ways. Just as we enjoy different types of characters when we read or watch things, playing them is similar. If that priest says “I’m a female tauren” then play it as such and enjoy your time.
Heroes come from all walks of life and enjoying the game with such variety can be refreshing!
Saying it’s weird/wrong/inappropriate to want to play a female character because you’re not is like saying it was weird/wrong/inappropriate for J. K. Rowling to write Harry Potter because he’s a dude and she’s not.
Really shouldn’t get hung up on these sorts of things.
It is weird if you identify as your character… at least for me and I personally RP with my characters xD
But it is not weird… is subjective as the reason may vary from person to person. On some people is the norm because they want to see a sexy character for them.
