Thats a good point, it could render the other runes useless, or less desirable
Explosive Shot was that rune, it was exciting to use, especially when you get a triple crit. They should have just nerfed the damage to something that is reasonable, rather than repurposing it into an ability that no one can find any use for.
Ya I agree, seems kinda useless otherwise.
They would have to offer something like a mortal strike on Aimed Shot or a 5 second lockout silence to tempt people away from having other abilities even be usable, and I doubt theyāre going to offer things like that.
Yeah i was suprised they changed it to an AoE ability, i thought theyād just tune down the dmg of explosive shot
Serpent spread would deal 32 damage to each target hit and following up with Chimera shot would do less then 12 damage to one target from the effect of the shot with 85% of weapon damage added.
That combo would cost 100 mana + 13% mana.
Chimera hits like a truck for an instant attack.
Tip : Apply serpent sting beforeā¦ itās also incredibly useful as it refreshes the sting (Mana management) and saves you a gcd.
Serpent Sting doesnt scale with AP, it scales with SP, so any gear you get is useless for serpent/arcane shot, chimera doing 85% of weapon dmg and a measly 15dmg (40% of the dmg of a full serpent dot) is not good at all. It will not scale well.
Edit: Plus chimera is mana hungry
2nd edit: druids starsurge was recently buffed, is an instant cast, and does over 200+dmg now, my chimera hits for around 90dmg + 15 from the serpent sting. That is a bad instant cast ability if we are comparing.
But it cost way to much mana.
Of course SS isnāt āgreatā on its own since it doesnāt scale, but it is still a flat 40 damage added each Chimera shot, in addition to having a 100% uptime for the entire duration of the fight since it isnāt likely to drop as it is refreshed by chimera constantly.
MM is all about Auto-shot, just like every physical classes in classic, use a weapon swing timer to make sure youāre never missing a shot, then weave in Aimed shots right after an Auto shot, queue multi shots and refresh Serpent Sting with chimera. This will net you amazing damage in the raid. Thereās more optimisation you can use as well now that we are free from using the bugged out scorpid, we can use cats and raptors, set bite on auto and manually press claw to make sure the pet is never focus-capped.
This is a very āengagedā hunter gameplay, as far as classic and lvl 25 goes. Itās rewarding if you put the practice in. Give it a try, I would never go back to BM.
You are missing the point, The whole reason for this post is that fact that the Rune are boring, not that we cant do good damage. I am very aware we are capable of good dmg.
And how is your Chimera hitting for 40 serpent sting dmg when mine is only hitting for 15?

Even R3 wouldnāt hit for 40 damage. It would theoretically hit for 32. I say theoretically because of resist stuff.

this was almost as good as the 187% increase damage druids got with their 1% damage spellā¦ it was so goodā¦ i thought how the heck is this even in the game at level 1 doing 60 damage on a tick, friggin crazy fun haha
The problem with CS is that itās lower or similar damage to an auto or multi-shot and costs 16% mana. It will make you oom quickly and is not really better to run than BM rune for 100% uptime and no mana spent. Or, at least, that had been the case. Not sure now. But mana is definitely an issue.
The good thing about it is that it penetrates armor. Itās just too mana hungry, almost not worth the button press. Needs to be reworked imo. Just a flat 40% damage nerf with nothing in return was too much.
Because it can crit. Just did for 64 damage.
