I was in a H Queen pug the other day and 2 gen z’s started insulting each other in discord. The group was quickly disbanded.
They did a good job demonstrating what you wrote about lol

It’s ironic to hear this in 2024, especially considering the current air of the world. People have been canceled or worse for voicing opinions that others disagree with and find distasteful, yet people are supposed to just cover their ears and eyes in a game that many use to escape the tragedy that the current real world is, to be subject to that in game as well?
It’s not that people became more sensitive, it’s that people are tired of being punching bags to those that can’t release their anger in healthy ways.
I mean… yeah it is pretty much laid out that way entirely. I can exist within confines that doesn’t mean I enjoy being confined its just part of those compromises one makes in life.
To an extent i think there may be something to it.
i mostly been doing FFXIV where they will enforce their behavioral rules, not that it’s necessary on there since 99.999999999% of the players that i interacted with so far on there have been super pleasant, i can count on 1 hand the amount of rude players i seen in that game over the many years i played it.
ESO is pretty chill as well in my experience, seen maybe a few rude players on that game as well.

It’s Toxic cause the game dosnt work the same way it use to. it’s not fun anymore for long periods like it use to be for me. I can’t sit and play for 8-16 hours a day anymore. I have a job, a GF, Kids I take care of ect. And even then I feel like I finsh everything I set out to do in WoW in no time. So I finish fast and go do something else cause there’s nothing in this game that hooks me like it use to. I stay away from classic (Not cata) cause I get really addicted to it and go back to 8-16 hours. I even would play it at work when it rereleased. Retail WoW has nothing keeping me playing it other then the titles and mounts I have.
Was never really that great. It’s just got worse as time has gone by. Will admit unless the mods have crackdown, or cleaned up that cesspool over at Riots game League of legends community was way worse than this game. Didn’t take but 3 weeks of playing lol before I stopped playing it 
Retail WoW has evolved to be all about you now. Your warband, your great vault, your delves, your keys, Solo queuing, LFR, scaling etc. The gameplay is centered around you now.
Compare it to Vanilla there was a need to group up. There were elite quests, all the best loot was behind group content. You were forced to interact with other players. You had to “play nice” to get invited to groups. We were incentivized to help each other. You had to be part of the server community to reap the rewards.
Yes there has always been toxicity but it was more like a few bad apples. In retail today it’s built into the game and reinforces a culture of individuality over community.

This is a major part of it.
I’m definitely seeing it way more abrasive now than ever before, and I started in TBC so all the “but it’s always been toxic” nonsense falls on deaf ears.
Maybe they have always been toxic, but was never my experience.
Though lately I’m more and more bitter.
The systems Blizzard has added in recent years, the focus on Esports and Garbage streaming platforms.
The absolute lack of any tangible CM presence on the forums now, we have 1, who only rarely posts, but that’s better than nothing I guess.
I just have no reason to care about any of you anymore.
Blizzard has now designed this game to be this way, I have no reason to stop and help someone struggling with mobs they overpulled while questing, I have no reason to buff randoms like we used too while out questing, I have no reason to team with you for the most part unless it’s 13~ seconds for the weekly world boss.
The whole game now, me, you (like it or not) and everyone else is just apathetic to each other.
This can only breed toxicity, it sure as heck doesn’t create friendships, or comradery, or help to foster a team spirit.
Even class design now, Look at Tanks in all content but high end, we are all garbage under their shoes until they need us at the very end of the game.
Blizz could have steered the community onto a better way, but they don’t want that, they want M+, they want MDI, they want The Great Push which just saying makes me cringe, they want Race to world firsts, they want opportunities to garner ad-revenue, they want AWC, they want blah blah blah…
Blizzard doesn’t care about you anymore, so why should we care about each other?.
That’s just modern business though.

Players don’t go to the forums and WoWhead to make connections and praise the game and have a good time. They come when they have an issue and want to complain about it or find a solution for it or both.
Obviously there are exceptions, but that’s the average use case for engaging with the game outside of the game. That is not a new phenomenon.
If you want my honest opinion I feel it’s not just wow but everywhere lol. Maybe I am getting older 
but people seem more impatient and angry all the time.

There is a difference between being confined and being an a$$hole. Using slurs and being a jerk to people is not a healthy way to vent.
