Is Deathrolling Legal?

I see people deathroll all the time, and I’ve seen people make serious money on it but I’m curious if it’s even against the Terms of Service to begin with… or if it’s even allowed.

deathrolling? Is this the new term for win trading? Win trading has had consequences in the past.

Death rolling is rolling a set amount then rolling the result of that roll and repeat basically. First to roll a 1 loses

Oh gambling, Unless things have changed this used to be legal so long as it wasn’t advertised on public channels.

Gambling or betting with other players in-game is entirely at your own risk. If you are the victim of a scam, contact us. Game Masters cannot restore any of your losses, but will take action against confirmed scammers whenever possible so they won’t scam other players.

Also-

Advertising either casinos or deathrolls is a violation and may result in silences or other account penalties.

Ah thanks for the link, I forgot to mention it’s also breaking the rules if it’s scam.

It’s generally dealt with by one of two ways.

  1. It’s a scam.

or

  1. It’s spam.

Almost all communication about casinos in public channels ends up getting wacked with a penalty for spamming.

I used to raid with a guild that did this after every raid. Was common for folks to win or lose up to 100k in a good or bad night. Was even more common that someone had to buy a WoW token in order to pay up

It’s totally allowed but enforcement of paying up is completely reliant on players agreeing to pay what the addon says they owe

Well, death roll is when an alligator grasps prey in its jaws while it’s in the water and just rolls and rolls until the neck (and who knows what else) is broken. Why is it a gambling term now? Sorry that this is not relevant to the actual topic haha

Never played “death roll” but one of the guilds I raided with did the Hi-Lo thing where you roll a certain range like… /random 1000 and the person with the lowest number had to pay the person with the highest number. IIRC there was an addon for that form of gambling too. I started opting out because if I lost, I would pay without complaint but if I won, I saw lots of excuses but no winnings.

It’s almost always the poorest players who seem to love gambling. I don’t think most go in with the intent to scam - I just think that people who believe gambling is a good way to make money are financially illiterate and terrible with their money and that’s why they’re poor in-game (and usually out of game too).

Some people are thrill-seekers who just love the rush of the risk/reward of gambling of course but those players are usually more willing to pay up because the rush comes with knowing you can lose something.

Its tolerated but you can’t complain to Blizzard if you get scammed basically.

Personally always only do it with guildies, never had issues in any way.

I used to participate in it, yet I stopped after losing a lot of gold and deciding it wasn’t worth the risk. I would rather hold onto my gold than lose it all super quick due to bad rolling.

At your risk
It’s not supported by blizzard but it’s allowed
Spam advertising is not allowed.

Deathrolls are between two players (technically you can have more, but it doesn’t work as well), where you roll at say, 1000 and then whatever you roll, the second person rolls from that until you hit 1, in which case you lose and pay the agreed upon amount.

If you do gambling between bigger groups, the method you described is usually the one that they use.

In every guild I’ve been in you weren’t allowed to gamble until you paid your debts.

I was hoping an Croc was involved… :crocodile:

When you want to spice up raid night, you deathroll 1000000.

Yeah. Funny thing that. They always seemed to come up with money to play, just not to pay what they owed. Not much I could do, I was a peon low-totem-pole DPS in a mythic raid guild. I only participated so I wouldn’t look ‘stuck up’. But that pattern of general disrespect played a huge part in me leaving.

yep, there’s an addon. we do this during raid breaks, but have never once had a problem with someone not paying.

if it happened, we’d just blacklist the person so they couldn’t participate in the future.
