Is Anduin a Death Knight?

Seems Anduin’s got the same consequences of being based on the default Racial Model as Zekhan, who is quite the baby-faced baby troll in the Cins. Yet, his in game model … looks like every other Troll in game.

I’d blame the art style of WoW’s in-game models, but they managed to make Turalyon look decent. Surely they could have done something more for Anduin.

Not at all surprised that they gave Zekhan a generic troll face, though. He’s lucky he even got a unique model in the first place considering how long it took them to update characters like Gallywix and Baine. A unique face on top of it, and I’d wonder why he wasn’t leading the Darkspear instead of Rokhan.

Arthas did die. And it was before he cut out his own heart.

Rise of the Lich King explicitly mentions him feeling the power of the Lich King freeze his veins and stop his breath once he puts the Helm of Domination on. Arthas is also described as Undead in Chronicle Volume 3.

Christie Golden uses obfuscating language like, “Straddling the worlds of life and death” and “Alive after a fashion” during his time as just a Death Knight but not the Lich King. I guess at that point you could argue that maybe he isn’t Undead yet. But once he puts the Helm on, he certainly is not alive anymore because the language becomes very explicit.

Arthas’ path was a very different one, and he retained agency through it all. His treatment of Sylvannas shows that quite clearly. He wasn’t required to put Sylvannas through all of the particular torment with Quel’thelas already ground under his heel… It 's clear that everything he did to her he did it BY CHOICE. Because he was that pissed off that she and her Rangers DARED to fight him. He literally took it as a personal insult.

Anduin on the other hand was given the choice of signing up or “being made to serve.”

It’s clear that the second option has been invoked.

It’s also clear that he’s still a breather.

Think you meant to say “leading the Horde” there, my friend. Saurfang’s unique model came after how long?

Trolls are always looking great.

You guys need to take your advice and stay away from the voodoo.

It does a body(and face) bad.

I get that Domination magic controls him - what I find interesting is how his appearance has changed so radically. Why would being controlled change how he looks?

There’s only one pretty race in the game, and while it may not be trolls, it’s not humans either. Definitely not humans.

It’s definitely trolls.

Trolls and Naga. 100%.

Nah, trolls aren’t pretty. That word doesn’t begin to describe the majesty of trollkind.

Blood elves are all the pretty.

Trolls are beautiful. You are being very judgmental insulting them. Stress on the mental. Because troll ladies are beautiful.

I don’t know if he’s a proper death knight, but I think he’s at least something akin to one, though more like Arthas as a “living” death knight. I suspect he’s still alive, at least for the moment, if only because I don’t think the Jailer would have had him properly killed after having kept him alive in captivity for so long. I think the Jailer needs Anduin alive, or at least he did for the first part of whatever his plan is, because if he was able to use a dead or undead Anduin he could have killed him as soon as he was recaptured.

Now, here’s the tricky part for me: Arthas was obviously alive when he picked up Frostmourne, and he wasn’t killed and then raised like most other death knights, which has led to plenty of discussion previously about when exactly Arthas stopped being alive and started being undead, since he remained up and about and conscious the entire time that he was a death knight, and what exactly caused his death. I’ve even wondered if Arthas could have survived losing the Helm and Frostmourne being shattered if he hadn’t also ripped out his heart, and if it might have been possible for him to return to being a living person (not that I think he should have, just wondering about the logistical possibilities). Tirion certainly seemed to think that it was theoretically possible before he destroyed Arthas’ discarded heart for good. Anyways, applying this back to Anduin: I don’t think he’s dead or undead yet…but I don’t think it’s guaranteed that he’ll stay that way. If he’s going through something similar to what Arthas experienced after picking up Frostmourne, he might gradually pick up more undead traits over time, until he eventually is some sort of undead. If that’s the case, then rescuing him becomes a matter of both trying to save him in time, and also figuring out if his condition can be reversed at all.

This is, of course, all rampant speculation on my part, and I fully expect that whatever we get from the new PTR this week will completely prove me wrong, but that’s part of the fun!

No.

  • He wasn’t raised from the dead.
  • He’s not proficiently using death magic.
  • Zovaal is controlling him as a powerflow vessel to do his bidding, if anything it’s like the Old God mind-control where they temporarily have newfound abilities whilst their puppet.

Additionally, I’m sick of priests being sh!t on by Blizzard. Seriously it’s bloody annoying, even the Legion campaign the priests class hall questline was to be the hapless princess needing rescuing from the paladins.

I mean after the Legion class campaign, even one of the priests who was a Night Elf pretty much said “Peace out, priests are trash so I’m evolving into a paladin.” which is pretty disgraceful on Night Elf priestess lore too.

So if I - a paladin, go with ICC transmog, along with a runeblade and command dark magic through choosing Maldraxxus covenant, I’m a Death Knight by your logic? :open_mouth:

Same with warriors. Guess it’s pretty easy being a DK now days hey.

OK, cool down fellow Aussie, don’t be ranting about what is merely me being curious about similarities. I don’t mind if he stays a priest, I think it’s nice to have a racial leader who isn’t melee. As I said, I was interested in the similarities and the fact that he physically looked different from his normal self. Shrugs It could be due to stress, to some weird side effect of the initial introduction of Kingsmourne to him, and so on.

In the artwork of Anduin’s armor set that went out in the press pack there was a couple of shots of a helm that is part of the set, which we haven’t seen in any cinematic yet. It looks a lot like the Helm of Domination, and I won’t be at all surprised it he is made to use it, perhaps to dominate some sort of mawsworn group somewhere in the Shadowlands. Or elsewhere.

Personally, I’m happy with however it turns out as long as it’s an interesting story. He can be a hunter for all I care, really. Well, it would be nice if he got himself a tiger and headed off into the forests for a break; life hasn’t been kind to him over the last couple of expansions, after all.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to give off an emotional steam to the thread subject, it’s a rather valid question / brings up players thoughts etc on the subjected matter. The first list of reasons for him not suiting to be a DK I was inexpressively just listing reasons.

The part about priests though was more projected anger @ Blizzard for their poor writing, not necessarily your thread.

I mean, she shouldn’t dish it out if she couldn’t handle it then I suppose.

All she did was make a factual statement; Anduin is not attractive.

You’re the one spreading unthuths and slander about the beauty of troll women, the third prettiest female race in the game (blood elves being the clear #1 pick, followed by orc women, then troll women, then blood elf men).

• You don’t have to spend time as a corpse to become undead. It can be instantaneous - and we don’t exactly know what Sylvanas did to him to put him in his current state. He could have been killed off screen and raised for all we know.

• how ‘proficiently’ he’s using death magic is irrelevant because 1.) All we have seen is a glimpse of his new abilities in a cinematic and 2.) he’s using his abilities at the direction of another being - so he’s exactly as proficient as Zovaal needs him to be.

• we don’t know the nature of Zovaal’s domination magic to say for certain how it works. We know it can work on the living and on the undead, we know it was a relatively weak influence on Nerzhul and Arthas but seems to be much more potent when it comes to Anduin, and we know that Zovaal has been mastering it over a long period of time. It’s possible Domination magic, by its association with Death, turns its victims slowly undead over time (as seemed to be the case with Arthas) but it might not. We absolutely do not have enough information to say how Zovaal’s control of Anduin works and what, if any, lasting effects it might have on him.
