Ion tweeted that he doesn't want any RPPvP servers at launch. Here is a breakdown of why that should change

Boy, the conversations here are popping! Troll or no troll, agree or disagree, it honestly makes me glad that people are discussing and bumping these threads as it keeps this topic in the forefront, right where big B will see it. Keep it going everyone!

On Topic: I find myself in agreement with Ogodel. If they are considering not launching even 1 RP-PVP realm, how many realms can they really be launching? Otherwise, they’d just convert one of the RP or PVP realms and call it a day, easy.

It seems as if we might be looking at 1 RP, 2 PVP, 3 PVE. Maybe even just 2 PVE.

Eilethalua brought up a good point: Blizzard stated that they would host the cWoW servers whether there tens of thousands of players or just tens. So if there is 1 low pop RP-PVP server, is that so bad? (p.s. couldn’t find the interview where they stated this but know it exists, would love if someone could dig it up)

Six servers is a bit low. I’d be surprised if they had more than ten.

Hopefully people can still see how this is a terrible experience for an RPPvP player.

Do you roll on a PvP server gambling that character transfers will be permitted?
If not permitted, you waste months of time.
If yes, such an exodus can hurt existing servers and eviscerate guilds and friend groups with some people transferring and some opting to not $$$ pay and stay.

Do you wait for the release of an RPPvP server, thinking you’ll start when the server opens?
If no such server even opens, you forever missed the curve and fresh server experience for no good reason.
If yes, and they offer transfers, then you will be behind compared to people that paid for a transfer.

Hopefully you can see that no matter the combination of outcomes, not having an entire server type at launch, ie not even a single RPPvP server at launch, severely hurts the RPPvP players.

This is not 2004 and it’s not patch 1.8. It’s meant to recreate patch 1.12, “the definitive version of Vanilla WoW,” according to Blizzard.

Maybe in 2004, with ~10 million players, it wasn’t such an issue.

But if Ion is really concerned about server population health like he claims, and if there really is going to be a “lean server list” in Classic WoW, then neglecting to release any RPPvP servers at all at launch does nothing but hurt any chances at a genuinely healthy RPPvP server and player experience.

Just try to put yourself in the shoes of an RPPvP player and see how this is an incredibly crappy experience no matter how things turn out, unless they offer your server type at launch.

I really only like PvP when it has RP behind it. “This is our town.” “This is our raid entrance.” “You strike Honor Hold; we will clear you out. And then we will go clear your town out.”

I’ve fought over questing hubs from expansions back. Basically anytime that someone in guild said “I’m leveling an alt and so-and-so or such-and-such-guild is camping this hub”. Our guild master has a very low tolerance for horde killing guildmates. We get even - generally by getting the group to a 2 minute rez timer. I always thought that putting a lightwell on someone’s corpse was more of a statement that any of the variety of derisive emotes.

I like Wintergrasp and Tol Barad for the world implications of PvP conflict.

World pvp with sharding just doesn’t have the same flavor and implication, so I don’t. (You know… unless I see some horde running through town being chased by the guards… that is just begging for a /pvp /cast holy word: chastise (yes, stun talented. It is sort of like when I saw a pally bubble hearthing out of Stormwind trade district back in the day. Mass dispel just seemed to cast itself).

It was just April Fools - which traditionally over the years has been one of Blizzard/WOW’s best holidays IRL. BUT … this year, we had one lousy patch note with some lame stuff in it. Face it, current management doens’t care about anything to do with actually having FUN. Blizzard used to be a bunch of fun loving geeks who wrote this neat game that you could actually LIVE in. They had fun just doing what they were doing. Now - you’re right. If it’s not raiding, it’s nothing.

You all know what it is - they’re sitting out there saying “Well, it will only take a few weeks to prove “you think you do, but you don’t” and then we can get back to just leaving the stupid classic server up for the 10 stupid people who insist on playing it while we go on with the next expansion on schedule.”

I’m not that pessimistic, yet. There have been insane decisions coming out of Blizzard, like loot trading in dungeons, no spell batching, only 4 content phases, etc… but they have shown to be humble and listening and have changed their initial decisions and listened to the community.

There is literally no downside to having 1 RPPvP server at launch. If after 1-3 months the population is too low, just merge the server with a low pop PvP server.

Ion claims that he wants to see if there is interest in an RPPvP server after launch.

Then give us a chance by releasing 1 RPPvP server. Otherwise, it’s just a disingenuine cop-out.

I have zero interest in this, but I don’t see any reason not to give you guys your horrible nightmare server. Endorsed.
