I disagree the best we can do is wonder what to do if the majority of players DONT quit before the end of phase 1
They are not. They are putting people in layers due to the concentrated amount of people in different zones. Once people spread out there wonât be need for layering. Or you will get login queues.
You can agree or disagree but all we can do is wait and see what happens and what Ion and/or the devs say.
NoâŚthat was sharding.
Layers are shards of a complete continent.
And there will be multiple layers.
They only promised that it would be gone by the end of phase 1.
They changed their stance from sharding the initial zones to this layering which is sharding an entire continent.
Google âwow dev interview on layeringâ where they explain it.
True⌠i just hope they consider the population not declining and have some type of back up plan. At this point it seems like the only option is to hold off on removing layering after phase 1 because the people playing grows. Then we have a situation where we are a year into classic and layering is still around.
I didnât say they werenât? Doesnât really matter. The concept is the same. Layers just being a bit more permanent than sharding was.
I think they will remove it by phase II period, even if mega login queues.
Well TinamaryâŚI donât plan to come back until layering is gone.
One big reason I left wow was due to sharding and watching everything appear/disappear/reappear all over the place.
Itâs not that they think most people will quit, itâs that they think thereâs going to be a gigantic tourist phase. We will still very likely have quite populated realms, but this way they avoid the issues that come from merging servers and the other issues of preferential servers. Itâll still be there, but with fewer options itâs less likely to make an impact.
Anyone who thinks weâre going to retain the players that weâll see in the first week in the long term doesnât know how the average player works.
Iâm not sure they ever explained it, but I imagine itâs a time logged in situation.
Welcome to the real world. Weâve been waiting for you.
But the devs said they can fit a complete realm population on a layer and have multiple layers for a realm.
Layering is different, you are in a singular layer that encompasses the entire continent. If itâs working correctly it wonât fade in/out. If thatâs too much for you thatâs fair, but itâs a temporary system to avoid the many problems even private servers had with population density.
They have said they will not have layering by phase 2. Itâll leave either beforehand or with the patch, once world bosses are added you cannot have layering by their own words.
Vanilla realm population (3000~) or initial Classic population (9000~)? Because the latter is very likely to have a lot of latency issues. Pretty sure they said each layer is the size of a vanilla realm.
The way a layer is assigned to a player, and how static the layers are seems still under development to me. I am hoping it is very difficult to change layers in released version of the game.
EspureâŚI will wait.
The last thing I want to encounter in vanilla is being in the âwrong layerâ when pvp battles occur in Hillsbrad, Crossroads and STV.
Actually it will be quite easy. Just relog or get an invite and you get ported to the leaderâs layer.
Itâs already being abused in the beta to âhop layersâ to get resources like ores.
Thatâs the way it is now yep. It is not great.
I hope things gets changed so that a player does not swap layers by logging out/in and there is a 15 minute cooldown on layer hopping, for starters.
I guess we will wait and see. I just hope layering doesnt become the source of a huge poop storm that makes people not play.
So are they going to kick out some of the people who already have characters as well because the server is overloaded?
Thatâs not a solution.
Also to add what someone said above about this not being a 15 year old game to many. I have been pleasantly surprised to have saw a lot of people in these last two stress tests that never played back then and they were loving it. So many people who were shocked and didnât think they would. One person today said they didnât know why but they were loving it much more than they thought they would and didnât want to go back to BfA.
Good games donât die. vanilla wow never died. There were pservers for years and now we finally get an official Blizzard server.
Nintendo is making hand over fist money with their retro games they brought back.
Also, at this point if layers is going to be a thing and all it takes is to find someone in a layer you want to be invited to to be in it, why not at least make them like channels so we can choose our layer?
I know it could still be abused but itâs going to be abused no matter what. If itâs going to be there, give us the option to choose our layer like so many other games give you the option of switching channels.
