I’m hoping someone can help me. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve had trouble with an invalid target error message popping up frequently during combat. Not the one where you can’t target ANYTHING, it seems like every other hit is coming up with an error message–I get it on world quest combat, PVP, dungeon mobs and bosses, everything. But not all the time, just every few hits. My dps is half what it should be a lot of the time, and one of my guildies confirmed that my main dps came from auto-shot in one of the boss fights in Shrine. I’ve not altered my play style or rotation at all.
Trouble shooting steps I’ve taken: cleared the cache, disabled my addons (DBM, skaada, tom tom, mech and nazj rare share), restarted everything. I’m about to try deleting my addons outright, but yeesh, I need some of them. Any info would be much appreciated.
Before you reinstall reconfigure addons Ardyssa let’s test the UI properly. If it doesn’t help then no reason to go through that hassle.
**Important First Step - If you have the Curse/Twitch - ElvUI/Tukui or similar addon manager/installer - disable or temporarily uninstall. (Those will interfere with the test)
Close game completely. Navigate to the main Wow folder > retail folder. Rename the Cache, Interface and WTF folders to .old — Cache.old - Interface.old - WTF.old
The game will install new folders upon startup. Test with a new UI and no addons. If that didn’t work simply remove the .old from your original folders and delete the new ones the Launcher installed. (This returns your previous settings as they were)
Also run the Scan and Repair tool. On the Battle.net Launcher under the Wow-Legion emblem you will see “Options” open that - tool is there. If it finds errors run it again. Takes 10 mins or so to run.
Thank you for the quick reply! I did as you suggested, but am still receiving invalid target notifications during combat (this time on the training dummies in the Great Seal in Dazar’alor). I deleted all my addons from WoW before running the scan/repair and creating the new UI files. So even with a completely bare bones, factory reset version, it’s giving me errors
Again thank you for the quick reply. Having tested out on a few other alts, the problem is confined to my beast mastery hunter. I thought for a moment that it was something to do with my pet attacks, but the error messages are happening regardless of whether it is a pet attack or a shot from my weapon.
Still no effect…I am still receiving “invalid target” randomly throughout all my fights I truly appreciate your help and continued patience. Thank you so much!
This is an odd issue. I’m wondering if it is a piece of gear you are wearing that is malfunctioning. I see you have an engineering helm - can you switch that out.
I’m encountering the same problem and I tracked it down to the Irradiated Undercoat, which I see that you are also wearing. Try removing that and see if it resolves the problem for you.
Mind reporting that in the bug report forums? If you can verify that a specific item is doing this, that’d be better for that forum so that the quality assurance team can try to reproduce this. We appreciate you following up anyway!
