Invalid Target bug

Thanks! omg..

This was the obvious answer that I think everyone is missing. I actually didn't even know that check box existed!! ANYONE EXPERIENCING THIS-

After an auto Blizz update- my character was unable to cast/attack anything that wasn't me.
Go into your Menu > Interface > Combat

In there- check to see if Auto Self Cast is checked. If it is, obviously uncheck it. I also used the drop down to select none for the key binding. Worked fine for me.

Mine was actually checked off.. must have done that after the update or something.
just happened to me, looked like a complete *hole PvP botter in AB.

10/10 cried everytiem
okay so i was doing a BG today and RANDOMLY couldn't attack anyone upon reading this thread for a solution thanks to Pancake for his helpful post i tapped my alt key several times and it fixed so i'm starting to wonder if this isn't a problem with the game but the keyboards themselves. hope this helps someone
Happened to me in dungeons today. Glad there's a work around, but really, this thread was started in 2011 and seems to have been a fairly consistent bug for the last 5 years? About time is was fixed permanently.
I'm going through it right now, frustrating to know that this is so long.
Nothing to resolve this manually?
Funny. much later in the years and the bug still exists. happened today and managed to fix it for the character. Go into interface and reset it all to defaults then go back and set it up the way you wanted it.

Decided to, after fixing it for me, test what your solution was. Would only do that if the game acted like you were holding down the Alt key. Might be a key binding that needs to get reset and cleared. Still looking through the keybindings to see if there was an option for it to give a clearer answer.
UGH, seriously you guys need to start reading the posts in a topic before posting. I've answered and explained this YEARS ago, and quoted myself numerous times since.

It's NOT an issue with the keybindings. It's not clear whether this issue originates from the keyboard, OS, or the game itself, but somewhere along the way the game is under the impression that the Alt key is being pressed. This is clear from the way it interacts with the auto-selfcast setting, as well as how it interacts with macros or keybinds that use the alt key.

There's nothing you can do in the keybindings that will change this. Keybindings only tell the game what to do when it detects a key is being pressed, but they will in no way cause the game to think a key is pressed when it's not, nor will they prevent a misread key.

You CAN change or disable the auto-selfcast option (which is found in the interface settings, not in the keybindings), and that will prevent the "invalid target" error. However, doing so will NOT prevent the game from continuous to sometimes think the alt key is down when it is not, and it will continue to affect any macros or bindings that use the alt key.
Hit the alt key a few times and it worked. Thanks for the help!
When I expierianced this bug on my Mage the game seemed to be convinced that the alt button was being pressed. So all it took was pressing the alt key for everything to go back to normal.
Alt key or Disable and Re-enable Auto Cast also worked for me, happened a few times recently. Thanks for the posts.
Got kicked from a dungeon because of this :'(.

I read all the posts. Hit the alt button, didn't work.

I also tried checking and unchecking auto self cast, didn't work either. My poor mage can't do anything for awhile now.

I tried /reload and logging out still not working.
Still happening in 2016 lmao..
IF YOU HAVE B O N G O ' S THIS HAS A OPTION YOU HAVE TO TURN OFF AS WELL
I came across this bug and immediately knew it was something I had done. It has to do with the water detail and shadows for some odd reason. The moment I changed my settings of these 2 is when I got the bug. I reverted back to my previous setting and the bug was fixed instantly. If you are having this problem, set your Shadows and Liquid Quality to GOOD. I have everything else maxed out. I've done this several times now and the bug occurs every time I raise those 2 in particular. This has worked on all my characters.

Again the FIX is
Set SHADOWS and LIQUID QUALITY to GOOD
