This happened a few days ago on my mage. Everything that I targetted was an invalid target if I used a direct spell on it. All I could use was AoE or auto attack. It was immediately fixed when I relogged.
However, this time it's occuring on my druid. Relogging didn't fix the issue, nor did disabling all of my addons. If I attempt to use something along the lines of Feral Charge, it will say target too close regardless of my range. What is going on?
As I was typing this I attempted to attack something again, and now it's working 5 minutes afterwords.

I am having the same issue, my buffs, health stone, and AoE spells seem to work fine, and the Ctrl hot keys for my pet still works. Whenever I use a spell such as Immolate, Corruption or Hand of Gul'dan the UI just says "Invalid target". I am attempting to relogg in as I post this, just wanted to see what the deal was.

Ran into the exact same problem just now.
It was awesome, being in the middle of an escort quest and I'm suddenly locked out of most of my abilities, forced to melee the aggroing baddies with my boink stick. Thank goodness I could at least still bubble and heal myself. :P

Had this happen to me, TODAY, with my mage. This bug is clearly a long time bug. Only been going on for YEARS.
This same thing happened to me today as well. Reloaded about 7 times and relogged 6 times. Nothing seems to be fixing it. Only happening on one toon. All other toons work fine. Opening a ticket with blizz.
Gearlancer, have you tried disabling all addons on the affected character?

Reloaded ui (3 times), nothing. Relogged, nothing. Restarted WoW, nothing.
After restarting WoW the second time, then it worked.

Whenever I've encountered this issue it seems as though the game is stuck thinking that the self-cast toggle is on, ie it thinks you're trying to use all abilities on yourself, which gives you an error for offensive abilities since you can't attack yourself. It'll also be apparent with modifier macros if the modifier is the same as your self-cast key (alt by default).
I don't know if this is an error in WoW thinking that the key is being pressed and held, or it could be an issue with your OS or even your keyboard incorrectly telling WoW that the key is down. But usually just pressing alt (or whatever your self-cast key is) a couple times will clear the issue.

Today was the first time I ran into this bug. Toggling the self cast/alt key fixed it for me. Thanks for suggesting that.
i am so mad right now.. this has been happening the hole day and nothing is getting fixed
This just happened to me today as well. I relogged twice. My whole interface is screwed up. My equipment screen always show other gear I can equip in that slot which never happened before. Next, I was doing a heroic where I can only use aoe spells. I cant do any single target spells as it shows invalid target. THIS NEEDS TO GET FIXED ASAP
I just encountered this on my monk, seems to be caused when the game locks up/freezes and you alt tab, or hold alt, I've noticed this glitch happens slightly more frequently when logging in to the game through the battle.net client
