Interesting PCGamer article about the cinematic

The Article is pretty much on point (imho), its how I have felt this expansion, its feels like I have been looking for the sigils for the jailor and helping him more then trying to stop him. Also with the side kick the boy king and his magic sword its all to funny.

The hate camp is far larger than the like one. That thread on reddit has 3600 upvotes. And reddit is far more positive than this forum. When I make negative posts about WoW there, I usually get downvoted. But my negative posts about the cinematic and WoW’s story are getting hundreds of upvotes. Players almost unanimously hate the main narrative of SL and especially Sylvanas’ drawn out arc.

And no it doesn’t make sense that she’s willing to have millions of people murdered while being this stereotypical Kefka type psychotic villain and then suddenly develops a conscience for Anduin. It’s just terrible and inconsistent writing.

Spitting facts, Callie!

Whenever I see articles like this, I go and research who wrote it. This guy has been bashing WoW for a long time. Games Journalism has really gone down the crapper. It’s spewing opinion as fact.

Warcraft has never had a great story. It’s merely just been entertaining. It’s not anything ground breaking, it’s over the top campy Saturday morning cartoon entertainment.

I don’t come to WoW for amazing writing. I come to see colossal demon titans stab a mountain-sized sword into a planet.

I shall see how I feel when he wipes out all the blood elfs

This doesn’t take into account the fact that youtube only allows one up or down vote per account. And many folks watch cinematics and cutscenes more than once.

So your numbers may need some readjusting.

Which is nothing in the grand scheme though. WoW has millions of players, 3600 or even 10,000 is barely a blip on the radar. It’s not a good gauge of the overall actual public opinion. Just the handful who want to talk about it on internet forums. No one can say the majority of WoW players do anything when we have no real stats on it.

To be fair the author said that the story has been terrible since BfA. And I personally agree with him. But BfA is a Shakespearean masterpiece compared to Shadowlands.

You don’t need to survey every single player to gauge popular sentiment. It’s analogous to polling. Based on my own experience, Reddit does not bash the game and I have had MANY negative posts downvoted into oblivion on there in this past. I don’t think there is any negative bias. The response on reddit in my opinion more than likely reflects popular sentiment.

I couldn’t care less if they kill Anduin. In fact I encourage it. :hugs:

Check the comments, this is a comment he made in response to someone bashing the writers.

I really don’t care for these kinds of comments because I’ve met plenty of the Blizzard writers and I know they’re all talented passionate folks.

I think the problems here are above them—structural issues with how the game is developed. Instead of being given the space to tell a story, everything is shoved into minutes-long cinematics that drop maybe once every few months. Between that, we get almost no storytelling that actually relates to these characters and their development or motivation, just a lot of worldbuilding filler about secondary characters that won’t matter in a year or so.

Like, for how much importance Sylvanas has had over the last few years, she’s physically been on my screen (either via cutscene or in-game quests) for, what? All of 45 minutes? Compared to hundreds of hours?

Now compare that to Final Fantasy 14: Shadowbringers, where the main villain accompanied me throughout my entire quest and had several hours of cutscenes and dialogue that allowed me to understand and sympathize with him.

This actually fits the way i feel extremely well.

I’m surprised.

I would love to have merely entertaining.

I dont come to WoW to see a giant sword stabbed into a planet. Gameplay is fun, but for me, in a mmoRPG, the setting and story are important. Story can just be world building without a huge overarching story.

I am just tired of people saying they are trying to “subvert expectations”.

How about just “meet minimal expectations”?

“Now I know why Illidan dipped at the end of Legion… he wanted to be galaxies away from this :poop:.”

hahahahah best quote ever.

Its not a narrative disaster and only some players hate it. People who have no understanding of Sylvanas’ character and where her story is going hate it. People hear outrage more than they hear praise so naturally because there were a few hate threads about Sylvanas people are going to take that and make it out to be more than its not. Not everyone comes to the WoW forums or posts publicly their opinions on WoW.

So you are using the idea others have been throwing around that WoW is like an abusive relationship? I am the only one who understands her?

It’s been like 2-3~ expansions now of waiting to see where her story is going. If years of story is “just keep waiting for it to get good”, it’s not good.

Might have nailed the problem defending them. Story feels messy and inconsistent and nonsensical but hey, as long as we please the people perfectly content with just anything falling under the “rule of cool” we did our job right?

No. She has years of lore about her character and honestly it seems like everyone mad at Sylvanas right now knows very little about her character other than oh no she burned Teldrassil down.

And of course, in your “Must protect Blizzard at all costs!” mindset, that is somehow a proof that they’re doing a great job I imagine.

Funny how I typed that before I finished reading your post… you’re so predictable.

Anything works as long as he can raise his shield to protect the poor defenseless multimillion company putting out this.

They will have nothing to write about until WoW has been dethroned, so they’re going to look for reasons to attack.
