I have a character originally named “Juiçe” that had a that had a commonly used special character letter “ç” that I’ve been using for years. I transferred her to a different server and the game forced me to change the name saying it was “inappropriate.”
I changed the name to “Juicé” and things have been fine.
I decided to test a new character with the original name “Juiçe” with no error or issue… so I don’t know why the forced name change occured?
Is there a way Blizzard can switch the name back for me? Not sure if it was a bug that occurred, but that would suck if I would have to pay $10 just to get that name back when it was wrongfully labeled as inappropriate.
Possible that someone else with that same name is already on the server you transferred to. That would force you to change since you can not have two characters with the same name. Anyone bellow level 10 would not show up on the armory.

That usually means that the name is taken by someone else on the new server, not that it was reported for being inappropriate.
That you were able to create a new character with the original name does line up where it has been theorized that the name release system only kicks in when someone is creating a new character rather than transferred characters.
Jury’s still out on whether that’s intended or not, but I also don’t know if they’ll grant a free name change because of it. You can put in a ticket under Purchase Failure and ask, but keep your expectations tempered.

I was able to make a character on the server with the original name, so it was never taken when I made a new character with it. That’s why it seems so weird to me that I can make a new toon with it, but it forced me to change it on my DK some time after transferring.
So the only way to release a name that was previously locked, but which now is available, appears to be to create a new character. There are some other threads on this, but it appears when you transfer to a new server, if there is a name that was in use at one time, but which hasn’t been used over the period to release it, you can’t use that name as the name change on transfer to the server won’t clear the name in question, even though technically its available.
The best option to resolve this, is to create a new level 1 character with that name, it will release the name thats being held if it can be, you can then delete that level 1 character, but the name will then be locked to your account temporarily, when you transfer your other character into the server, it will get the name.

Oh man that sucks, but this makes total sense now. I forgot about the lift on old claimed names was a thing.
yeah I’m out of luck then I guess lol
Well, you could open a ticket to see if you can get a refund on the name change, but honestly it might not be worth the effort. However, if you do, keep it short, polite, and I would just take their first answer, also thank them in advance for looking at this for you.

Deleting any level 1 characters will free up the name to the entire server. Character needs to be a minimum of level 30 for it to be reserved to your account for 30 days before anyone is able to use it, otherwise any character below level 30 will free the name to anyone to be able to use.

Good information/clarification.
