In Game Voice Chat

Im wondering if there was any official post on why InGame Voice chat is so terrible? One of the best things about Overwatch was the ability to chat with people in random groups, and how clear and easy it was when you joined different lobbies. Made a lot of ingame friends that way. Yet 20 years a of wow and its still better on Discord.

Have devs addressed why the standard of quality is so subpar in wow? or any plans to improve it?

An official post on why something is… bad?

This feels more like feedback than a question.

Team games like Overwatch require coordination, WoW you can barely get people to type to you in text chat unless they’re insulting you for playing badly. Blizzard isn’t going to improve on a system nobody uses.

well I was actually hoping for a statement on if they were planning to improve it or if VC was a priority at all…

Obviously, I’m not an employee so this is pure speculation…

But I would say it’s not much of a priority. The in-game voice chat was introduced in the period between Ventrilo/TeamSpeak dying out but before Discord gained mainstream success. With Discord being so dominant in this space, there’s really no reason for Blizzard to devote time to compete with them.

Ok, I suppose the reason would be if they wish to police voice chat for toxicity, but that seems like a brutal waste of resources to me.

I would be so much more curious to know if they have numbers that show how many people actually use it.

Blizzard said before anything that requires voice chat people just use things like Teamspeak and Ventrillo so improving it felt pointless.

Like Discord has a sound board where you can play Peter Griffin laughing, will take forever for Blizzard to match that.

I would not mind having a Discord chat room that launches when you enter in game VC. They could improve it simply by having an open Discord server with hidden game channels that can only be launched from inside the game. 2 birds, 1 stone.

No, it’s a question.

Asking why a feature of the game is such poor quality is a legitimate question.

i know you greenies gotta toe the company line, but don’t be a silly goose.

It’s not even bad. It’s 100% comparable to Discord. The old version of it sucked. The current version is solid.

People just don’t use it because Discord was already entrenched in the community (and it’s better for permanent groups / communities).

In-game voice is basically perfect for pugs but no one uses it because reasons.

I used to worked with a guy that loved to play PubG at work when he wasn’t busy and he just used his smartphone app to chat with his team.

They have always been free to give their own opinions. You might not like what they say, but they’re free to say it.

Used as a questing tool with a few others, it’s fine. Good luck doing LFR with it.

I go in general and leave my mic on while I vacuum and rustle plastic bags. I have an MP3 player on shuffle between a dog barking and babies crying.

I come back from afk and it’s like I’m being serenaded by a choir of angry two headed ogres! Screaming at me to heff my huff and shut my heckin heck heckin heck. Sure, it’s a little “pitchy” but I find beauty in our terrible harmonization. Yenno, undead and all.

::sighs::

What else?

I mean LFR isn’t something I’d use voice for to begin with.
But I’ve done a pug raid with in-game voice.
It was fine?

I mean blizzard doesnt even make it a priority to design the game in a way that doesnt need add-ons. They specifically design raids and dungeons around the idea of Weak Auras and crap now… PvP is unplayable without a DR tracker… why would VC be anywhere near something on their radar?

Are you asking or telling?

In game voice chat feedback. Like the background music / noise mute feature when chatting, but think it is a sqeency bit op. background volume drops 100% when it only needs to drop about 75% so I can still here some melee sounds and know i am in combat. I think this would be preferable to modulating back and forth between full volume and nul.

heck, give us a UI setting for it , if there isnt one already.

This seems like the reason. What a nightmare that would be in this game. I can imagine some players entire sense of self worth could be destroyed in an M+ that goes bad.

LOL, in-game voice chat. Every time someone brings it up I flash back to when it first released. At the time my wife and I were paying per month for a Vent server (in ye olden dayes before Discord) and we were excited that now we might be able to cancel that and save a bit of cash.

Then we tried it. I literally couldn’t recognize the voice in my ears as the voice of the woman I share a house with. We both hopped back into Vent and the rest is history.

That was sometime back in Wrath if memory serves. So no, they’re never going to improve it. Especially not in a world where Discord is so omnipresent.

While it is an actual voice service now I remember trying to use it with friends. The quality wasn’t the worst, it was like 2nd to the worst I’ve had. The worst part for us was sometimes one of us just couldn’t hear each other… so we had to remake our channel constantly with lots of logging on and off.
