Immersion: the end of the loading screen

Something I’d like to see phased out is the end of the loading screen.

Kind of iconic in art, definitely, but other games have it worked out. God of War Ragnarok comes to mind at the moment.

Portalling to the tree while you walk around it until the loading happens is ULTRA immersive IMHO.

Not sure how best technically, and i know the big rub will likely be ‘it takes me 3 longer seconds to load’, which I get, but tbh the stutter and jump from the bulk of the world being loaded but still continuing to filter in while I’m trying to start moving around the new area being mitigated is totally worth it in my opinion.

Let me take a portal from ORG to Silvermoon, my character is phased(teleported/delve-doored/whatever tech is most efficient) to a glowing blue hallway with faintly visible silvermoon architecture or NPC ghosts around me as I run/walk to the other end while assets load in the background, then seemlessly meld into the fully loaded world at the other end?

Absolutely sick.

How long is your loading screen? And how does that work for people who only take a couple of seconds to load in? Would it get cut off? Turbo sped up?

I’ve never played an MMORPG that’s done something like that.

Personally, trading a 2-3s loading screen for an “immersive” 10s experience each time I zone, is not worth it.

Please don’t do more of those load zone hiding things

They break way more often than they should, I lost track how many times I had to play the DF mega dungeon 2nd half blind cuz the stupid whispy loading screen wouldn’t go away instead of just having a quick 2 second load screen

depends on the zone.

Point still remains that we have Delves now unless you’ve never done those, so we can see the world without loading screens.

…would you PREFER a loading screen?

All I run is Delves. You’re trying to equate a phase change to loading the game. Those are two entirely different things.

It’s a loading screen regardless of what it shows. I’m just asking questions. Like I said, I’ve never seen something like this in an MMORPG. Thus, I ask questions.

I would prefer a loading screen compared to a 10s clip, or adding another zone i have to manually run through for 10 secconds.

The hiding loading screen thing is a meme.

And God of War Ragnarok sucks. Old GoW trilogy was better.

lmao.

Why is the assumption it’ll take 10s to load?

You specifically mentioned entering into a hallway, and running to the end of it, then running out of it.

Thats gonna be about 10 seconds from start to finish.

And it would have to be a bit more static, on the longer end. So probably even longer. To account for people not loading at the same rate. Some quicker, some longer. So it would have to be created to assume longer.

maybe so.

i’m not saying the hallway has to be exactly 72.5 yards long for every player, nor that you have to even get to a specific point.

It could just melt away when it loads.

Either way cooler than a flat plate with a loading bar and a player tip.

I think I’d prefer the way it is now rather than a clip (of the length you’re saying).

I do mess around in FFXIV with different ‘transition’ animations (yes mods) and there are some really funny ones you can make your character do my friend adam makes his character stack it just before the transition to the new zone.

I do think there could be more immersion if there was a way to ‘pre-load’ the new area to make it faster maybe.

not a clip, just a playable loading screen. Either way it’s still loading.

I’m just not staring at a literally unplayable thing while it’s doing that, is my idea. It could even just phase you in when done loading.

Even mentioning that it could be a funny one is better than just a flat plate with the loading bar.

But a funny playable loading area that you phase into and out of would be immersion breaking, no?

I could mess with that.
Something like a mini activity to do while ya wait? Though I think where we are in tech age I don’t think it’s nearly as much of an issue it used to be. Currently SSDs loads fast, especially NVME’s.

lol not if i’m actually playing a game and the things in the game make sense in the world I’m in.

Loading undermine and seeing a shade of a goblin accidentally blowing himself up would be a little funny.

Loading Silvermoon and seeing a elf turn a guy into a sheep (literally right by the portal already), kinda funny.

But immersion breaking?

Ultimately it depends how they build the world and where ‘zones’ separate. When WoW came out, being able to move seamlessly from Azshara to Tanaris without ever seeing a loading screen was a huge QoL over say, Everquest where you got a loading screen leaving every single ‘zone’ no matter what: Ak’Anon > LS > Steamfont Mountains > LS > Greater Faydark > LS > Kelethin just to move about 4 zones from Gnome starting zone to Wood Elves starting zone.

But since instanced content exists, I don’t see how they eliminate the loading screens again when the game has to move our characters from an outdoor space into a newly created instanced space.

It’s not broken, I see no need for a fix.

Aren’t they already doing this with Delves? Either way things are loading, it’s just whether you’re playing the game or not while it happens is the difference, as far as I can tell.
